They were originally grown side by side with other beans (yellow + purple climbing).

Still grow, but poorly, and very little crop. Beans of the same type from a new packet do really well.

Are they heirloom seeds? Or are they weird dodgy brothers seeds? Sometimes, the plant you get from the store, as seed or seedling, is a hybrid, and grows well, but the seeds it produces revert back to one of the base plants. Therefore producing a poor crop.

Proper seeds from a normal packet from bunnings?

I reckon your right - must be a hybrid. I'll just keep planting them till there's none left :D

And I'd actually removed about 10-15cm of fine lateral roots (that filled the entire dutch pot)... from the plant ball anyway... to retrieve the clay balls ....

Rupe...
My lettuce has also gone to seed, flowered etc... when is it ok to remove, if I wan the seed? When should I plant the seed? Is there anything to stop me growing lettuce year round?
I really hope the seed pods aren't fully formed and popped by the time I get home. Based on seeing the state of your plant you removed.
