Thanks Ell. One last......how much higher does the water have to rise above the cap before water pressure overcomes air pressure in the drain and the siphon is triggered?

With the "modified U" on the exhaust outlet, the water doesn't fully cover the cap before it commences draining the grow bed - and keep them coming I'm only about 40 posts off being a legend

haha
Yeah mate - it is to create a partial blockage for the air in the drain/outlet pipe so that pressure can build up giving the siphon a good kick start (then it drains).

I think GF and DD are having fun using them (not sure tho)

I found that if you have a straught of atleast 30cm (1') the siphon will kick in as well jsut a littler slower but as the water runs down the pipe it suckls it along. I found this out becaue i hooked my 2 siphons up to one down pipe. Everytime one siphon kicked in so did the other. Got me thinking that if i equalized the tanks i could get the siphons to work together giveing em even drain times.

Hey Jonathan:
I think the inertia from the accelerating downflow is definitely helpful, maybe even necessary to keep the flow going. Maybe that is what AM needs with his? It looks like his ends immediately.

I have been running a pipe-in-pipe siphon all night for the refugees in the garage. It is about as simple as possible, because the pump flows plenty fast enough to kick it in. It is a 3/4" pipe with a 1" outer pipe, and they are about 1' long. I cut the bottom at a very slight angle to help it stop. I couldn't figure out an easy way to cut the notches in the top so I have been slicing the sides with my miter saw and sliding the pipe back and forth to make a rectangular hole, with just a band of material at the top to contact the outer pipe's cap.

Good one Dave, never thought of cutting the bottom at an angle to get the air to break the seal.

With my centre pipe I was trying to minimise the amount of air trapped in the "bell" housing, ( the distance between the top of the pipe down to the lower lip) the more air there the more has to be drawn out before the siphon kicks in - but I do like the "neatification" of it
