Hi John
Congratulations!
Its probably as clear as mud to those outside the hobby. Suffice to say you put in a lot of effort to gain the callsign and rightly deserve a pat on the back
It seems there are a few hams lurking on byap ..i hold a full uk licence (M0 prefix).

Are you human?: YES at least mostly

I was never quite a HAM but the Lynx part of my screen name came from the old CB radio days of yesteryear. Also my tendency to use my handle instead of my real name over the air and I transferred that to online etiquette pretty much from the beginning.

Oh how times change.

Hi TCL
A lot of hams have their roots in cb radio, some won`t admit to it though.
I had an Avanti PDL2 on the roof in 1975, the neighbours loved it..not
They definitely wouldn`t like the antenna i have now.. its a whole lot bigger :D

In the aftermath of a flood or earthquake the hams are usually the first to provide comm links to the outside world

I didn't go to the link...but.considering I was a C.R.E.S.T. monitor for a few years many incidents where solved quickly and emergency response FOS was very quick  moments in some cases.
Life saving in others

I'm pretty sure my brother was a Ham for many years, not sure if he still is.

We had a CB for the 4wd when I was at school, I used to chat to my friends on it all the time :D

ham radio is fun to me. plus its nice to have outside link when bad weather is here. i only have a tiny elder icom 2m but it talks well. some of the HF rigs the club guys have that tested me for my license cost upwards of 10000 dollars and can say hello to OZ easily if they want to.

thats the main prob i have is being on proper frequency
as my icom will not scan and i sure dont see very well

see the radios must be tuned as they transmit on one freguency and recieve on another plus there is an offset to use a repeater and i have yet to get my little rig set up correctly.

hams are patient if they know your legal and trying or in my case almost blind and display challenged

i had cb long ago too and its what lead me to ham. i even remember my old cb license call sign kdu1828 :D

OK2KHD (Radio Club Hodonin)
that was before 1968 but still remember few things

as a school kid I did rig few superreg. valve receivers with keys and our CQs could be seen or heard on every tv or radio within 2k radius
until my father found the culprit and puled the valves out from my radio :(

If I may revive an old thread here, am excited as I just passed my general class license (Callsign KD8ITX) for the Ham Radio.

I wasn't planning on taking the test for another few months, I just started studying a couple days ago, was driving out to my in-laws and got a hold of a local ham on one of the repeaters that was giving out the test the next day in my mother-in-law's town, went down took the test figuring I would just fail, but I passed!

That saved me a couple months of studying :D I guess I shouldn't be surprised though, I do know a good bit about electronics, and the safety and alot of the rest just seems to be mostly common sense.

If the GC licence allows you to operate on 17m maybe we`ll cross paths one day.

KF4EKX. Don't get on much. Have a 2m mobile, but I need to redo the antenna, since my SWR is way out of whack.

Yep, I am allowed on 17 meter with my GC license, can't say I have spent really any time there, it seems pretty dead anytime I scan through there. I have been spending most of my time lately on 40 meter SSB, just purchased an older Icom (Mid 1980's radio, lots of fun!)

What modes are you running on 17 meter Hex?
