13mm siphons now :D

Perfect hydroton blocking size

I agree that a rock or root could block a loop siphon, but a bell siphon is a totally different story. As long as your media does not float, there is no way it can make it up the bell part of the siphon. And it would have to be a very overgrown bed for the roots to get up there as well.

But anyway - fit a damned overflow already  It only has to go to the bed beside it.

:)

Actually OBO the root detached, got sucked down and stuck between the outlet and the end of the loop. Was making a strange noise, came out like a length of exotic pasta, rootatelli perhaps.

ok ok, you're convincing me of a lot of things... they were in my mind a long time ago but I convinced myself to go small but when they block I'll go bigger. OBO says that it doesn't matter how long the plants have been flooded as long as they are regularly flooded so I'll go with that..

Has anyone tried using 13-19mm poly inside PVC white pipes? or should I go fully permanent and use PVC only?
Each of my GB's have only 40L, with 300mm deep and using only 250L FT... I dont have a sump in this system so i've only got 5 GB's using it. I just think that this system is kinda small for using big pipes. :?

A large supply and drain pipe would be recommended. You can tee off short smaller lengths if you want, but I will NEVER plumb anything smaller than 25mm diameter.
and then, only for supply. (very short *rigid* lengths may be used for drainage, as part of a siphon) 13mm imho is crazy, one root will change the flow parameters by heaps! or worse a 10mm bit of media? I shudder to think.
When I was using a 25mm long drain, I got it clogged with media twice... with detrimental effects.

the plants are still a bit small, but then again that's coz I only got 10 goldies in the tank. but this is four weeks result... with all the plants added gradually over the weeks.
I guess this is a show and tell.

Yes, if I do say so myself... mum has her own lettuce and tomatoes growing in her backyard and they're not doing as good as mine are. The only disappointment in my system are the English spinach... they went to seed too early. I think I planted them a little too late as they're supposed to be planted while it's still cold and getting warm.. not in the beginning of summer!

Yesterday I went to Bunnings to get some black/coloured piping that everyone convinced me to get but they didn't have any at 6mm sizes so I'll work out some bigger ratios with 20mm poly pipes and fittings to go with maybe about 20 up to 40mm PVC pipes. the weird thing is that PVC is sized on the inside whereas the poly fittings are measured on the outside :? I had an hour of playing with them and comparing their sizes... madness.
I also bought some polythene string to string up the Lebanese cucumber plants and some green oak leaf seedlings as I loved the look of Rupe's results! Hopefully they will not go to seed. 8)

Best tool you can get is a vernier gauge. Cheap plastic one about $2 saves a lot of mucking around. :)

with reference to hygicell's last 2008 rant at this link
I thought that was very wicked thought ... if that's could be the case then I could consider adding more goldie comets to my tank.. all the elements (NH4, NO2, NO3) are still at zero in my cubby house.. I have around 5x40L vs around 250L FT... there are 10 in there already... and they are still growing bigger  Dunno how many kg's they are now but I'm wondering on how to weigh them without killing them in the process!
