What about chook layer pellets, i have been eating these via the eggs for years now, do the fish ( goldies at the moment survive on pellets?)?

They will eat them, they are relatively low in protein though. Not realy a concern for goldfish.

My gold fish of all sizes are thriving on cat fish food, the floating kind. It costs only slightly more than the cheapest dog food. I paid about $20.00 for 50 lb. sack last spring. The larger goldies come to the surface and scoop it up. the smaller will usually let it soften and sink before eating. In this colder weather there is usually some left floating in the morning, so I wont feed untill night. If still some flaoting I wait to feed. This is labeled 32% protien and dog food is usually only 21% or less.
