Well, I added the salt, and they all seem much happier. Feeding more frantically, like they used to :) Thanks guys - I wish I had listened to you all earlier and salted weeks ago! I just didn't want the plants to suffer, and thought I would get away with it. Silly me :?

Just another question about nitrite. If the fish have been exposed to .5 nitrite for 8 weeks with no salt, then a few died and they all looked a bit flat, then salt was added and they all seemed to pick up (one more died after salt was added), will that length of exposure still have an effect, or should they all be ok now?

Do you think it's worth buying some bacteria now? If I was doing it again, I would definately get some bacteria...

We all think the same thing after a system is set up. I would have used less fish and more time maybe set up more GB's and started with a better pump. Its a long list.

I have found that fish exposed to excess nitrite or ammonia (or long term, low doses) do suffer long term.

Much like a person living in a polluted environment I suppose.

Howdy Jessy! Just floating barra pellets that I got from the hatchery where I got the fish.

I have a bit of an issue now though. I bought a 25kg bag of small pellets, and a 25kg bag of large pellets, but the small ones float, and the large ones sink. I have tried feeding them the large pellets, as I'm almost out of the small, and they don't seem to be interested in them, and it's hard to find and scoop out any uneaten pellets as they're on the bottom. Anyone got any tips for converting them to the new pellets? I've tried throwing some in as they are in a feeding frenzy, but I don't think they have eaten any at all?
