Just go for a timer based system 15on/45/off...

TMO will leave you with aeration 15on/45/off

Not completely Frank... perhaps 15 mins without.... the drain continues after the timer deactivates the pump... up until that point the growbed is full...

Standard methodology applied in all BYAP System kits..... most are however also fitted... and encouraged to have... an aeration pump (battery backup) with at least one, usually two airstones...

Ok, Rupert, you know my opinion on aeration efficiency of blowers and airstones like used in AP systems, so let's not start all that over again.
Plenty to find on that subject on the forum.

you neglect the other obvious advantage of having the pump work continuously:
constant removal of solids
which diminishes the need for aeration

if you want a backup, use a second pump
it will ensure solids removal AND biofiltration AND aeration AND growbed flood and drain

Or a float activated sump pump perhaps... float low off..... chift pist ceases overflow to growbed... growbed continues to drain.... float high on...... sump pumps to fish tank... overflows chift pist... ???????

Incorporate with a timer.....?

Posted above before I saw your post Frank... yep I'm aware of your position on aeration pumps etc....

And your seemingly fixation with solids removal.... most of which is small particles in suspension... any heavier particles may fall out of suspension... and will be picked up next time the chift pist overflows....

That's the experience of everybody that runs chift pist Frank.... it is just not an issue for the short periods of time that pumping might not occur....

In RAS aquaculture systems... it is more of a concern.... and they usually filter constantly... we use the growbeds...

I say again Frank.... the effect of solids collecting on the bottom of the fish tank, beginning to decompose and robbing oxygen from the system water.... is just not an issue....

Neither is the BOD of any particles in suspension... as long as the AP system is designed correctly....

If it was the case that the growbeds were 15+ mtrs long... and the flow rate really slow,,, then maybe.... but in that case IMO... you have other more significant issues anyway...

Lets not hijack a newbies thread with technical discussion... take it to YOUR thread Frank...

Lets just pass on "proven" advise and suggestion... even if they not be of the "enth" degree of efficiency....

KISS... please....

please play fair, Rupert
you start a discussion as a reaction to my post, ignoring what I wrote in a previous one
when I point out the discussion to be old and known and unfruitful to repeat you continue the discussion
now you suggest me to be the one hijacking a thread and you tell me to take it to MY thread ...

about "old", "established", "experienced", "proven" advise:
here is what Arthur Schopenhauer (famous German philosopher) said on new ideas:

first a new idea is ridiculed
then it is strongly opposed and fought against
some while later everyone says they supported the idea from the very beginning

Hey the bus is coming Frank, it's going to your 'other' thread.
Can you vacate this thread please, and leave it On topic, whatever your beliefs.

Take a running leap Frank... this is not about you... this is not your thread....

I posted some options for the thread owner to consider... not to challenge "your" idea...

But having said that Frank... I say again... I will not endorse, unproven theories, or bad advice, or suggestions of stock densities beyond those which are proven as reliable, easily built, cheaply built and easily maintained by a complete begginer (no offence Decal)....

To do so would be remiss of me ... and others....

I've suggested it before Frank.... start your own thread to discuss your theories... build a system based on your theories... and report on it....

In the mean time I will, as will others recommend and discuss ways and means of doing things ...

THAT WE KNOW WORK... BY THE EXPERIENCE OF THE OVERWEALMING MAJORITY...

Never fear JT, you didn't start this one ;-) There's hours of reading to do before you'll get up to speed on this little off topic discussion.

question:

if I go with a stand pipe, how do you determine what size holes to put in it? one hole, many?

the output pipe will be 2" - 50nn and the pump will pump 22.5gpm so should take 8 minutes to fill the GB

thanks
jT

Do you mean a slow drain standpipe? or an autosiphon bell siphon?
if slow drain, guess.
I think Kenour had a nice system where he could 'dial up' different sized holes to suit his purposes. I'll have a look.

Start with two holes, then add more as required :)
