OK guys,
I am a bit embarrassed about the size, but they taste good wrapped in foil with a slice of lemon and onto the BBQ.

The good bit is these were netted at 5:30pm and on the barbie at 6:30pm. Cant get fresher than that!

Couple of interesting articles related to trout in the latest Austasia Aquaculture mag...

One concerning "selective" breeding trials in WA to further develope temperature tolerance....

And the other concerning inland saline trout culture at Goomalling WA ... (2km east of Perth)

So why have yours "coloured up" compared to OBO's... different feed?.... your's got pigmentations in it??

I know that this is a bit of a late reply on this one, but I know you folks like pics and I hope this is helpful. Also, I apologise in advance. I'm not a biologist, but I am a fly fishing tragic so while the following is anecdotal, it is based on what I've seen out on the streams over the past 10 years or so. All the images below are all of "wild" rainbows (some were stocked into dams but they all have to fend for themselves)

That fish that troutman has there seems to be a hen rainbow, and the pink colouration is commonly referred to as "spawning colours" (by fishermen). Normally out on the streams I see the colour appearing around April (but depending on water temps it can vary). I do find the fact that yours are coloured up in October a little confusing though. I can only guess that your water is kept nice and cool and they have grown quickly which may have confused their body clock (??)

Here's a pic of a wild hen displaying the similar colouration, this pic is taken in April just as the water temp was starting to drop
Image

When they aren't showing this spawning colour, the pink tinge is much more subtle and it is overlaid by a turquoise sheen. This fish was caught in a warmer creek in October (unfortunately the sheen isn't really visible here ... I'll try to track down a better pic.)
Image

Prior to spawning the fish tend to have bright silver sides like troutman's, however post spawning they will go a dull steely colour and the flesh seems to lose its firmness. Some people don't mind this, but IMHO makes for poor eating.

Here are some images of post spawning bucks that show this duller colouration.

The fish's colours will vary depending location and surrounding, but the most notable change i have seen is the shade of green on fish's dorsal area and the distance that the spots go down the side. The dorsal colouration seems to be influenced by the fish's surroundings. The spots may be influenced by environment too, but i have a feeling they are genetic (??? I may be completely wrong here). I say this because I have caught fish with very different spots side by side in the same creek on numerous occasions.

Hope you find this helpful.

Cheers
Blake
