don't know where or under what conditions you were fishing, but it seems incredibly unlikely that it would be a sleepy cod, although it shows some resemblance.

Since we had snow on the 23/11 (just a few weeks ago) I'm pretty sure they are not sleepy cod.

They are definitely not the same as on page one. If they are a galaxiid then they are a different sort to any that I am familar with. Galaxiids that I know from around here are longer and thinner.

Which leaves us with some sort of Gudgeon or Blackfish.

Any other suggestions?

Hi everyone,

blackfish have a long fin down their spine. The picture looks to me like a type of Gudgeon.

God bless froggo.

Well after looking at the fin morphology I'd say it was definitely not a gudgeon and for the same reason the only reason that blackfish is on the list of possibilities is because thats what I want them to be.

I think I need a better photo. :(

heheh... that's positive thinking for you Stu.
My old man took a look, and said 'Minnows' or some other kind of native fish.

Thanks dad... that helped ;-)

Well it turns out the fish I caught are some sort of Galaxiid.

I've narrowed it down to one of three species:

http://www.nativefish.asn.au/brevipinnis.html
http://www.nativefish.asn.au/fhgalaxi.html
http://www.nativefish.asn.au/g-olidus.html

The ones I have have have the same general shape and fin morphology as these three, also where I caught them fits within the known distribution of these species. I'm still trying to work out which one they are becuase I'm pretty sure that I have seen at least one other species within the area and I will want to know not only which is which but how to know.

Does anyone know of any online keys or additional info on how to identify when specifically?

If in doubt throw them in a tank for a couple of months and then take another picture. :D

I know it is not a good photo but can anyone tell me what this is? There were hundreds of the little things.
