We are situated on 5 acres in Naples, FL and we are in our 2nd year of discovery, education, building and growing. We have applied for our Aquaculture Certification through the State of Florida--they require it--and had a big scare: Our greenhouse, 80x30, which we built 12 years ago, might be sitting on WETLANDS!!! Call just came--wetlands are about 150 ft. south of the greenhouse and just on the other side of the property! We took the RAS course at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute and have read and read and read and read....!!
Our water tested at 334ppm but Tilapia are resistant to that? Can't buy Aliflor any longer and the plastic over the greenhouse is 10%--boy, things sure have changed in 12 years--almost our complete product line previously used in our hydroponic greenhouse is no longer available :( Now we are trying our hand at aquaponics;Naples has some fantastic dining venues, and they are farmer friendly--supporting local farmers and fishermen. Our goal is fresh herbs, mint specifically, tomatoes and peppers. Talk to us...we need input and friends!!

Hi Trixie! I'm up in Mount Dora. Our system is really only backyard, no real eye for commercial in our situation (1/3 of an acre and residential zoning keeps me from looking for the permit.) Anyway, I came around to AP from small scale hydroponics and had to learn to like fish, I'm still learning but we have found a few really good methods that are working well for the catfish and will probably also work well for tilapia.

We like pictures so Please get a system thread going in member systems or in the commercial section if that is more appropriate for you. Even if you don't have your AP system up yet, I'm sure many of us would love to see the greenhouse and hydro stuff and hear about your modification plans and such. A few tips on the pictures, 800x600 is an appropriate size (I don't remember the exact data size) and you can only put three pics per post and they will be in reverse order of how you upload them.

Welcome, glad to see more people in FL getting into it.

Hay OBO I expect they meant salt when mentioning 334ppm but I don't know that for sure

Trixie, beware of mint.
Give it its own small bed, and make sure you can keep the roots out of the pipework.
I had my mint go spastic on me, as has many other members.
I have it growing now, NFT so just in a tub of plumbed system water. it's easier to keep the roots under control this way.

334 ppm dissolved solids--super hard water mates! Tilapia are resistant to hard water, or so I've read...we are interested in gold or white tilapia--and with a median temp of 78 degrees (F) we shouldn't need a heater?
A seed exchange sounds AWESOME! we are using heirloom seeds (2nd generation organic) and have harvested seeds--we'll join! We have:
CORN CANTALOUPE GR PEPPERS EGGPLANT MINT FIG ZUCCHINI SQUASH HOT PEPPERS BEEFSTEAK TOMATOES
We really don't want to do commercial..it's for us mainly for the veggies, but have found some interest in Bonita and downtown naples in using local growers for seafood and herbs. But all is dependent on us not killing the fish! LOL

Hmmm....if you are serious about not killing the fish perhaps there is a market for live-delivered fish....the customers can't get them fresher than that! Or you might look at ornamentals like koi although I have no idea about their water hardness preferences.

Hey hydro...too funny! Are you doing BYAP in wine country? Maybe we could trade wine for fish...?! Seeds are in gro-dan (rockwool) and the seed "nursery" is complete! Still working on getting the photos downloaded...I grow things: computers let me talk to people--as for tasks, I'm getting there! It's been in the high 70's low 80's here and good weather to go with it! Maybe I should have a glass of wine then try to download the pics...ha ha hee hee!
Peace,
Trixie

You like my headgear? All-natural!

one wine-country system: viewtopic.php?f=18&t=3620&p=132601#p132601

I don't grow wine: too much of it around for me to compete. I'll buy it and just grow some good table grapes that beat all heck out of the ones in the stores. The fresh veges we get from aquaponics are far more interesting and, I hope, the ease of weeding, seeding, and growing will make it really worthwhile. Getting fish will be a bonus and the possibilities of using the food that chickens spill (feed them on a grill over the ft) or having ducks in clean water rather than a sludgepit (search for duckaponics) is really inviting.

How far do you get in getting computers from camera to BYAP forum? Maybe we can help out...

PS: a glass of wine (or bowl of ice cream) often helps one relax past the frustration of computer roadblocks when nothing else does, but too many glasses of wine may make things.....less productive. *grin*
