Hey, sorry guys, I made a mistake, I tried to add W.A to my original post, didn't realise it duplicated it.

Glad you got a laugh out of it Jensilaedi!

I don't understand? i can't be the only one to a have jade perch in the west can I?

The reason I asked the question (after doing a search) is because i bought some "silver perch" from a pet shop some time ago and i am 99% sure they are jade perch but i lost a few in the winter and now i have one left.

The reason I asked is if by some chance someone in the metro area has jades just maybe we could try breading them or i could purchase a few larger fish and try to bread them myself.

and by the way I also have silvers so I can tell the difference and I will post pictures if I get some response.

I guess most people who are into Aquaponics don't usually buy fish from pet shops but I do from time to time in the hope of having different blood lines just in case breeding becomes an option.

Breeding of either Silver or Jade Perch requires specific "environmental" triggers... or deliberate and distinct... human intervention in the reproductive process Grunta...

Hormone injection... specific egg, larvae raising conditions and techniques... and equipment...

Not an easy task.... have you done any aquaculture or hatchery courses??

It's not like you can put a "pair" of perch in a tank... turn the lights down, and play some Barry White.... and voila.... little fish....

Just doesn't happen in tanks... sorry... :(

Rupe, I have done a few aquaculture courses and I do know a few people who have successfully bred silvers, I do know about the climatic triggers and hormone injetion and producing rotifers/zoo plancton to feed the lava at just the right age and size, my idea is to get it all set up and enlist the help of the people I know, who have helped me in the past with projects and I could contact my lecturers for advice also. and if I offer up a % of whatever we get out of it we all get the experience and maybe some fish to grow and do what we like with.

and Rupe the first silver perch fingerling's I bought some six years ago were spawned in a tank after human hormone injection, The guy I bought them off showed me his set up and how he did it from preparing the brood stock, incubating the eggs and getting the zoo plankton started in a pond, and I have access to pond's on a friend's farm where I would grow out the majority of the lava, I have managed to grow black bream in some of the ponds on this property so I found out a few months ago when I left my wife with my fishing rod to go and explore, I came back to find a good size black bream in the bucket that I put back for me to catch myself one day. This tells me that some of the ponds/dams will support fish as I put the bream in there about 8 years ago at about 25mm long and have never fed them.

I think if I was to go it alone with the artificial spawning the hardest thing would be knowing if the eggs were ready to be released, that's where the help would be required the most, before injection. but it's to late for this year.

Jamie, the perch does have spots and it grew almost twice as fast as my silvers and is a lot deeper and broader with that jade colour on its back, I didn't know about jades until I found this site and from this site I got a good look at some pictures of them on the Ausi fish site.

Good to hear Grunta.. thought you may have been going in blind... obviously not...

P.S ... Silver Perch are ready to spawn NOW.... well at least over here on the eastern seaboard....

If you could get organized, and find broodstock... you have until end of January....

Both myself and Monya recently attended the Hatchery course run by NatFish.... injected a 3.5kg female Silver... result 300,000 fertilised eggs....

Got lots of pics if you're interested....
