Sorry about that, Tony. Looks like the five-year-old son has learned how to hijack threads!

DD,
Well, he found the keys in the right order, now you need to get him to work on Words and Sentences.

Keep him involved, give him tasks to do and reward his attempts and successes. Use any mistakes as learning opportunities. It is a good way of having quality time with your children.
Pretty soon he will be posting about his own BYAP system.

Regards,
Tony

Sorry for the long times between posts on the forum - too many other things happening.

Last year, I had a problem with too little O2 in the water and lost all of the trout, so I installed a simple venturi oxygenator for each of my pumps and my O2 levels seemed to be adequate. I replaced a failed sump pump and things were going well.

This year, I was going great with water temperatures kept below 22°C, despite a couple of very hot days, courtesy of a pond fountain (helped O2 levels also I suppose)

This morning I had the worst HSM ever.

the pumps were silent!
Dead trout were floating on the water surface!
I checked the 240V connections and found an iffy double adaptor thru which all the Aquaponics power was fed. :x

I have been burying dead trout all morning.

Over 60 Rainbow Trout, each 250 - 300cm long.

I am devastated!

My Black Bream in the sump tank are still alive. :o

I have re-routed my power to a dedicated power outlet and am investigating permanent connection to a sub board where I can distribute power for the individual timers, pumps and air pumps.

I will need fish urgently to maintain the nutrient supply for my grow beds.
Does anyone in Perth, (or nearby) have any suitable fish which I can purchase?

SUITABLE?
Fish which are not temperature critical - This rules out Trout and Tilapia
Fish which are edible (preferred)
Fish which grow fast?

QUANTITY?
My 5 KL fish tank and grow beds would be able to support >500 fingerlings or >300 small fish >200mm long.

Can anyone help me please?

Merry Christmas,

Tony

Go the golden ponds perch tony, around $0.40 each, it is truely a great price. Get 500, feed them trout food, and they will get a bit of size on them before winter.

Restock with trout over winter and go again.

I can not stress enough that you need to run the aerators from a different circuit, and preferrably a battery powered inverter.

Better luck with the next lot, most of us have done the same thing at one time or another.

Bummer so now back on the bike and away we go again as OBO said airaters on a different circuit or inverter
Looking back most of fish losses this year are lack of air or simple equipment failure

OK, now have 200 SP fingerlings. That should provide about 1% of the Ammonia to my GBs as one of the Trout which died.

Humonia will be needed to keep our veggies producing until they grow up.

I have them in an aquarium for now, fed with drain water from a GB, then syphoning from the aquarium into the sump tank. This will allow me to monitor their growth over the next few months, before I put them into a larger tank.

I will be providing a separate feed for the Aquaponics power.

I feel that, even if I had an aerator, I may not have had sufficient dissolved O2 for the trout. The main aeration was from the eductors in the pump outlets. I will search for a secondary air source, capable of feeding adequate air for all of my fish, even if I have 200 SP at 500g size.

Any suggestions?

Merry Christmas,

Tony

AC-08 or similar would be a good size for you Tony.

HG-090 Air Blower * 200 litres pr minute

This delivers 2x more than the AC 08 and draws 90 watts rather than 138 watts. Karry from Gidgy (SP farm) reckons they are a better buy.
