When water clarity is poor in my tank, I run the pumps from 3 hours to all day, it helps alot  .
I also do the same in a high ammonia water test, seems to balance the system quickly :D .

I was going to adjust the ph but by the time I'd found out how the system had started to bring it down. Now I have to look into ways of making it go up. :D

Stop fretting - cycling takes up to a month. 12 days is probably at least 7 days short of being cycled at least.

Lay off the ammonia production for a couple of days until it starts to drop. Between 1 and 2 seems to work the quickest.

My experience with urea addition (through urine) has been that the ammonia does not register straight away, because urea is converted to ammonia by urease over a period of time. If you threw a full handfull in and are registering no ammonia, nitrite or nitrate, I can't help but wonder whether it is yet to convert to ammonia :? .

Maybe make up a small amount in a bucket and run a test to see what you get in terms of ammonia and then go from there. If in fact it is a problem with the urea not converting due to no urease (which I doubt, because others have used urea in the past) then you can always add a little urine to introduce the urease.

VB, So you're saying there may actually be a real use for the proberbial "Stale Bucket"

Yes Rupe,
Have been following that thread.
I've been using "Humonia" for a while now!

I was indicating towards some fairly useless work colleagues I've had in the past,
that tended to stand around like stale buckets of Pi$$ :)

Today:
Ammonia 2
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 20 - 40 only got a quick look before tube fell and smashed :(
I am hoping to get this partial cycle done by next weekend so I can get some fish.
I will probably plant seeds this weekend.

Try for sunday, the ammonia should have dropped a bit. PH and temperature will decide wether it is safe for fish.

Did a test yesterday:
Ammonia between 0.25 - 0.5 hard to tell at those levels :?
Nitrite 0.25
Nitrate 40+ on Sunday
Ph 6.8 going to see if can get some sea shells today
Temp is a toasty 28ish

Ph is still dropping down I used some calcium carbonate tablets (a supplement from a health food store) for people with osteoporosis  and ground them up. Raised the Ph from 6.2 to 7.4 overnight.

Looking ahead at getting fish on the weekend let me see if I understand this right. I minimise feeding and use water changes to control Ammonia levels? What is the danger level (around 1?). For Nitrites I should salt the system to 3ppt to reduce its danger? How much salt should I add for 950ltrs fish tank + 500ltrs sump?

thanks for help :)

Shouldn't need that much salt to negate the nitrite. About 1ppt should do the trick. Lets call your system 1500 litres all up so that is 1 1/2 kilos of salt.
