Been having a bit of trouble with fin rot on the goldies.
Also had aphids.
Been using home-made garlic spray on them (aphids, that is);
works well, but anyone heard of it harming fish?

Comments regarding feeding fish garlic oil...

and lastly a saltwater article
www.reefrock.com wrote:
"Garlic is used in a couple different ways in the hobby. The main use is as a food soak/supplement. People soak their fish food in a liquid garlic solution before feeding for 30 - 60 minutes. This allows the food proper time to absorb some of the garlic so that when the food goes into the water the garlic is not just 'washed away'.

Just like for us humans, garlic has the effect of strengthening your fishies immune system. A stronger immune system for the fish is obviously beneficial but the biggest claim is that garlic helps fish ward off ICH, Lateral Line Disease, Fin Rot, and a couple other affections of the skin.

However, as with lots of things in this hobby, you will find everyone has a different opinion on how it should be used and there are even folks who will say it does nothing to help fish.

Some will even say (usually the makers of the garlic) that you can even add a few drops of the garlic to the water at feeding to "help" those fish that do not get to the food right away or those who eat very little of the food we add.

As I recall, finrot is caused by bad nutrition and stress... but don't quote me on that.
At least from the references I have found, you'd have to say Garlic, (at least not in ridiculously huge quantities) wont hurt your fish.

What's your home-made recipe for your garlic spray UY?

I would be surprised if it harmed the fish.... a natural anti-biotic.... kills the bad guys.

Goes through the sprayer part OK, doesn't clog.

garlic as disinfectant is recognized in organic aquaculture and other organic produce:

6.14.6.1 Precautionary health measures must be established and maintained. Special attention should be given to the physiochemical quality of water. Other obligatory practices include appropriate species selection, provision of suitable feed rations, living conditions established in a manner that takes natural behaviour and stress reduction into account. In the event of disease, precedence must be given to a curative approach that uses natural methods and products. Veterinary care products and techniques (phytotherapy, homeopathy, etc.) along with authorized restricted substances may be found in Table A2.3 and A2.4(refer to Quebec Organic Agriculture Permitted Substances List: RABLI), and include:
 natural physical methods (such as drying and freezing);
 non-toxic inorganic compounds (H2O2, NaCl, CaCO3, CaO, NaOCl);
 non-toxic natural organic compounds (peracetic acid, citric acid, formic acid, ethanol);
vegetable substances ( i.e. aromatic species Labiatae (Mint Family) and Allium (Garlic Family) Ryana speciosa, Derris eloptica, Neem/Azadirachta indica;
 Oil emulsions based on paraffin and/or vegetable oil;
 Bacillus thuringensis);
 Permission to use Rotenone (extract of Derris eliptica or other plants) must be sought from the certification body;
 homeopathic products.

but there is a warning:
Quote:
It is important to point out that some products allowed for OPM may be hazardous to applicators. For example, red chili mixtures or garlic oil which are used as pest repellants can be
irritating to the skin.
Applicators should have proper protective gear and application equipment.

garlic and chilli has never worked for me, even with stuff i bought. maybe it knocked the grubs back a tiny bit but nothing measurable.
the only reliable thing i've found has been dipel and rhubarb spray. i sprayed dipel on my dirt garden the other day and all the grubs came out with in hours.... then wasps started coming from everywhere bundling them up and carrying them off.

Timmy you just didn't see all the fleas leaving my fish :D :D :D

Jokes aside. I am a great believer in garlic. Some say poisonous for dogs and some vets recommend it. Go figure. I believe it repels fleas and ticks. Also aphids. Even growing garlic around roses protects them. Feed finely chopped to hens to repel parasites.... etc

Cayenne pepper..... don't start me! LOL Just google it and link it with health. I have proved it personally. Eat at least 1 t every day. Been told it will drive monkeys away from my grapes! SOLD! :D
