welll a couple of days after the addition of the potassium sulphate the water has indeed gone green/brown and looks dirty. Cannot see the fish at all anymore, not even the goldfish and they are very bright in color.

So scrub the the idea of potassium sulphate, will have to go and have a look for the cream of tartar, is it negatively affecting your water clarity or any other effects.

and will do water changes in a weeks time if I see no real improvement in water clarity.

I plan to try a mix of moringa and spirulina to replace seasol.

My moringa seeds arrived today. Still trying to locate spirulina. Both are used to reverse malnutrition in children. Highly nutritious. Just going to liquidise them and add.... see what happens.

Some Nutritional Benefits of Spirulina

100 times more Vitamin A than carrots!

Spirulina is the world's richest natural source of Beta-Carotene (Pro Vitamin A), which helps to improve eye sight.

6 times more protein than eggs!

Spirulina has a very high natural protein content (upto 70%). This protein is a called complete since it has 18 of the 22 amino acids that the body needs and being organic in form, has very high digestibility (up to 97%). This ensures proper utilization & assimilation of the food a person eats.

50 times more Iron than Spinach!

Anaemia or iron deficiency is one of the most common health problems of our country. Spirulina's rich content of natural Iron & folic acid helps not only to greatly improve haemoglobin levels in the blood, but being organic, is 60 times more absorbable than synthetic iron present in most of the haematinics.

7 times more Calcium than milk!

Spirulina is one of the World's richest known sources of natural Calcium which helps build strong bones.

10 times more Potassium than most vegetables!

Spirulina's potassium content (up to 10 times more than common vegetables) helps prevent hypertension.

One stop shop for Anti Oxidants!

Unstable molecules called "Free Radicals" are generated in every human body as a result of normal metabolic processes. These have been linked to ailments like cancer, arthritis, cataracts, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes and premature ageing. To combat these free radicals you need 'Anti-Oxidants' like Vitamins A,C & E, Zinc, Selenium, Super Oxide Dismutase. Spirulina is the world's richest and only natural source of all these Anti-Oxidants.

Good Source of Gamma Linolenic Acid

Fat deposits in blood vessels called cholesterol are the reason behind a majority of heart problems. Spirulina has Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), which dissolves these fat deposits, thus preventing heart problems.

Spirulina is the only known vegetarian source of Vitamin B12 which helps fight stress and calm your nerves.

It grows in alkaline water.

Don't the nutrients in the food have to come from somwhere in the first place though?

Where is the pottasium, for example, in the spirulina going to come from if the growing media is deficient?

Looking at minimizing outside products. At the end of the day you have to add something its just the quantity. Growing plants in the dirt garden and making a fert for the AP system keeps more of the control in your hands. How much seasol do people add to there systems now? I just like the idea of filling a 200ltr drum with different plant cuttings and fill it with water and let it sit for a while. Maybe add a little o2 and heat to get things moving. If there is a need for potassium or anything else lacking it can be added then. What does 200ltrs of Seasol cost.

Comfrey is an excellent source of potassium and it is able to get it from deep in the soil. It is used in dirt gardens for this reason. Mining nutrients that are not available to most of the plants.

Also on another note. Saltwater AP system growing seaweed for making seasol. If it is able to take a lot of the trace minerals from sea salt and allow us to harvest it for the freshwater AP system. The added benefit is having a small saltwater AP system and some pretty fish. Or some lobsters. Not sure how fast seaweed grows.

Short answer. It won't.

But certain plants mine for certain nutrients more than others and if can be grown in soil or water here then those nutrients are captured for use in the AP system.

The idea is to incorporate what is in the soil on my farm into the AP system. I am fortunate enough to have very fertile virgin bushveld to work with. Everything seems to grow easily. Rich and full of humus. But even in poorer soil Moringa is known to mine deeply for its nutirents. I am on borehole water and I have been told so rich in minerals that I could bottle it. I have the right pH for spirulina.... but still asking around for it. It is excellent source of nutirtion too so want to include it. have no idea yet how successful I will be with spirulina once I get a starter culture but the moringa grows easily here.

I want to be self-sufficient. Going to give it my best shot anyway.

I am including a 500 gallon shallow spirulina pond in the next part of my ap system. I plan to use it for food (fish & human). I plan to place aerated compost tea into this pond as a source of nutrients. Its important to me that I get all nutrients from at lease local sources if not from my own ground.

Understand the human waste is loaded with minerals so I hope to find a clean way to close this nutrition loop and bring some nutrients from the sewer back to the ap. I am thinking I might try growing plants and moringa trees in a natural wetland to pull out the nutrients then feed these plants back to the fish or algae pond.
