VB, you're right about the shell grit, i confused myself with carbonates (shell grit) and bi-carbonates.

The beauty of shell grit is that it will maintain a ph of just above 7 if it goes lower more of it dissolves, if it goes higher it precipitate back out of solution.

Funny, I just can't imagine the peasoup phase. The water is so clear, smells sweet, does anyone know what kicks off the peasoup phase?

GF, there is starting to become a big difference in size. About half haven't really grown much(still around 50mm)and the other half are about 70mm I guess.

Mon, I think that you may miss it because you have your tank out of direct sunlight, there maybe other factors to take into consideration tho.

Yeah, I was wondering about the sunlight thing. These guys get indirect mood lighting during the day, but it's easily controlled by closing the shed door. Hoping this stops the algae

Sounds like the pea soup phase is directly related to a buildup of nutrients and sunlight. So maybe you are in for it. If in doubt, cover it, and plant more plants!!

Yeah, i have a thick cover of a large variety of azolla, in the hope that it blocks enough light to stop the pea soup phase
