Here is a pic of the plant progress........... transplant shock is no small thing, for two weeks they did nothing, then BANG!

They are either Bok or Pak Choi, can't remember which.

Will convert the bed over to flood and drain really soon, as there is much wasted space that doesn't get much water :(

Yes, seems to have bolted still will be good though, just more energy going into flower production instead of leaf production. i'm inclined to let all my stuff go to flower while still harvesting. free seeds :)

the last week i'd say its been growing 24mm per day, easy :)

have dozens of seedlings that have sprouted too!

might pick some leaves from the PAK tonight to put in the veggie soup and give the seedlingd some extra light :)

Any one wan't some dirt parsley? :) i have about 10 square m of it :) being fed by last years chooks :)

Bak choi in a bath tub is kind of surreal

I pulled one of the bok choi plants out today as i wanted to have some for dinner :) That and the fact that they have gone to flower and are not allowing any light through to the strawberries! Look at the second last picture i posted last time, this one is the mid-sized two weeks ago. Look at it now :)

For comarisons there is a size 9 runner beside the roots :)

My Bed is at a really low efficiency due to being continuous flow.

I'd like to publically made this admission.

I was wrong about the clay balls, for large plants anyway. Them being lioght was a + for me, but they are too light, and don't anchor the roots enough, a strong wind and the bok choi were all leaning over. It would probably be good for salads and strawberries though

Continuous flow was my choice, and worked well for a SMALL tub, but in a bathtub and larger setup flood and drain would be better, my salad mix has gone no where, due to them not getting any water to the tiny roots. Also there is a lot of wasted space in my bed that gets no water.............

I'd really like to convert it to flood and drain today but i think i'll run out of time after fitting lights and power points to my new kitchen.

Steve,

You're not the only one on the verge of a cathartic experience over different media types.

After spending the past few weeks picking uneaten food, fish poop, dead bees and a range of other flotsam and jetsam out of my satellite pot supply lines, I'm thinking that my next major move will be to flood and drain gravel beds......once I've sorted some sort of greenhouse arrangement.

While I don't retract anything I said about large commercial systems, I'm convinced that gravel beds are the way to go for smaller systems....particularly backyard ones. The alternative is to get into faecal partical clarifiers, sedimentation tanks and filters.....and that's going to cost more money.....and more messing around....than a small system could justify.

I had a change of mind RE: clay balls reciently too - they dont seem to 'filter' the water as wellas the gravel does! I will be mixing my clay bally with the top third of the gravel now...
