well, considering transporting and re-location of the redfin is an offence in itself i dont think we'd be concerned ;)

Hey Steve, i spoke to the guy who runs the tackle store i use in ballarat and he had some very interesting information about redfin .he said that they are not classed as a pest in victoria and when the lakes around this area and western vic ever get full they will be stocked with redfin.
I dont know if this is true but he is very reliable .

Blowing out my dam wall is not in my plan, but electricity might be an option. If only i could get it that far from the house. Anyone have a 300m extension cord i can borrow?

I have caught a few little ones in yabbie traps in the past, so i might try that again. Otherwise looks like i just have to be patient. Not one of my strongest traits.

Jim, from what I have read this is totally incorrect.

They are not considered noxious in victoria so they escape from the mandatory death penalty if caught, but they can NOT be re-located and DPI will NOT approve any applications for stocking in any dam. Unless its changed in the last 6 months.

Steve

If you are not in a hurry then I now a number of spots we can get them from once the summer is well under way. At the moment they would be tricky to catch because the rivers and creeks are still flowing and they are well dispersed.

If you could be patient we can get you as many as you want.

Electric fishing is rather illegal over here unless you have special premits for doing so (I used to have access to one).

Mind you it is a lot of fun and its amazing how much you catch.

IF you are doing it in your own dam then I think that is fine but if you were to take the gear off your property and were pulled over by someone who happened to know what it was they were looking at then you could be for it.

something some of you might find interesting.
i bought a cast net for our annual fishing trip up north and knowing that you need a licence to use one over here in W.A. I had a look at the fisheries site and found that Redfin are protected from neting along with trout and barra.

is a shame as small redfin are good bait for large redfin and would be a quick way of filling your fish tank.

Hi jessy, the fisheries web site says you do need a licence and it is $29.oo, I think it's a little steep as I only want it to catch live bait but thats how it goes, as far as skill goes, I checked out some instructions on youtube and practised out the back and I got it sussed in no time.

I did want to use it to catch some bonies in the swan river for mulloway bait but it seams that a no no.

Ok , if you are after catching bait.........then you would use a throw net, then a little skill, and a twist of the wrist . If you use a throw net......all legal

But , if you would like to use a drift net, or set foat and sinker net, then that is different..Not even the Aboriginies are allowed to do that.

This only implies for Recreational Fisherman, the Professional fisherman, have an even harder policey to implement.

Does anyone actual have Redfin in their Ap system? I'm very keen to use them and have been planning to do so for some time however then i got talked into SP because they are easy to get. But i'm back on the RF trail after talking to a mate in the country who stocked a farm dam with three, tried fishing it and never caught any but 2 and a half years later the dam dried up in the drought and he found about 20 @ 400mm, 50 or so at 300mm and 200 or more at smaller than 200mm. He ate a couple of the 400mm and loved them so i'm back in the RF game. Who has tried eating them?
