Time for an update I think.

Not much growth on the tomato plants and they haven't gone yellow yet but I thought I'd speed things up a bit and add a couple of goldfish... well, 5 of them. They are all still alive after 5 days which, I'm guessing, is because they hide in the part of the tank meant to house a ball float switch.

A few of the yabbies have shed their skin and we found one yesterday 'in berry' so we popped her in the 100l 'brood tank'. Everyone seems happy and healthy and are munching away on the food I'm giving them. I'm using a mix of: Chopped frozen veg (thawed), raw carrot, nuts, peas, corn, raw broccoli, cauli, lettuce. They are fun to watch dragging and munching at the food. They are getting pretty fiesty and no doubt I'll lose a few over spring due to fighting.

The dirt garden is booming... but enough said about that.

LOL! :D  :D Patience Imy.... Your time will come! :flower: AP only shows its true nature when the system matures out. Add some of OBOs Seasol too... ! :D The dirt garden must be getting stuff like that.

And then when your little critters are producing enough solids.... and your secret little world of water microbes matures........

That dirt garden growing any complete protein food too? :flower:

yabbies are a type of freshwater crayfish. In Australia we get in different places yabbies, redclaw, marron and heaps of others (all different species)

Yep, they are little, about 10-20cm long and have big pinchy claws. They live in FW.

I HOPE we get offspring! I have the two girls in a seperate tank (a barrel which leads to the main tank) that should keep them safe from big daddy yabbies and the goldies. I'll pop some onion bag in there soon as a little yabby baby haven.

My book says that they stick with the mother yabby for a couple of weeks after hatching. Taking longer and longer trips away from her until they are on their own. Development in the egg takes between 1-2 months, depending on the temp.

There are a few other potential mum yabbies left in the main tank and with two in the barrel, I'm thinking of other refuge ideas so I can keep them apart from the adults. I'm thinking milk crates covered in mosquito net and dropped in the main tank might be okay.
