Ok , I have spent 14 k on the system so far, I have it all logged onto a seperate part of MYOB, on the business I already run, so if I was to make a profit, it can be all accounted for........

Do I think it was a smart investment.. HELL YES

You can't put a price on enjoyment

On convienence

or sheer pleasure

It wouldn't take long to pay back with the price of 'not so' fresh produce in Onslow, would it?

there are lots of other advantages:
you simply cannot buy this freshness at the supermarket
think of all the time you save by not going to the supermarket
think of all the gasoline you save by not going to the supermarket
think of all the unnecessary things you would have bought at the supermarket...

but to really know what a system and the produce costs, the hours of building and of maintaining the system and of attending fish and plants should also be brought into account
not only the materials

if not you stand the risk of calculating yourself rich

can you really count the time if it's something you enjoy and would do in your spare time anyway? i guess if your self employed and every hour you spend on AP is an hour you could have been working, otherwise i'd chalk it up to "time i would have wasted on something less productive"

saves me getting bored and riding my mountain bike, which saves on replacement parts and hospital bills

I absolutely agree with all sentimental arguments, but isn't this thread about economics?
in economics the opposite approach is valid:
what could I - with my skills -have done in that same hour that brings in more money?

Economics question, could also relate to
the environmental footprint we display Frank.
With our time and consumption a contributing factor,
yes but, the saving on the fuels, wear and tear, time,
plus the time of the employees and infrastructure
required to fulfill staffing and the cost of building those shop
...and on and on and on....
We may only contribute to the infrastruct in a small way but
glued together we need the miriad of shops stalls markets
that we see ourselves 'needing'.
Or shop at home

The approach might be that practiced... but "valid" could be open to conjecture...

In an hour I could....

Destroy an area of Amazonian jungle the size of 20 football fields... and make a lot of money....

Move a lot of money from one country to another... severely impacting the currency rate... and make a lot of money

Issue a lot of dodgy sub-prime mortgages... and make a lot of money

Strip and dismantle a viable company, leaving hundreds of people without a job... and make a lot of money

Overthrow a government... and make a lot of money

Short sell a lot of shares.... and make a lot of money

etc etc....

With the right weaponary and guidence systems.... In an hour I could rid the world of most of the fat gutted, smug, arrogant, derisive bastards that have perpetrated the greatest con job in the history of humanity.... and the snivelling attitude that goes along with it.... and I'd do it for free....

When Gordon Gekko said "Greed is good".... he left out the ending .... "as long as you're not the one paying for it" ...

I'd call that worthy and worthwhile...

Economics is simple... it's about transactions...

In the not too distant past, those transactions... or means of exchange were of relative value and production...

Somewhere along the line, we got sold the bullocks that it was OK to coninually skim real money off the top of virtual transaction... that had no "real" comparative value of production....

And that this was not only sustainable... but desirable.... somebody always has to pay...

And once again guess who the mugs are that are having to put up the real cold hard cash... and back it by production.... to bail out the virtual monoploy kids....

That made a shit load of money.... every hour.... by conning us...

And in a couple of more years we will be the ones to bail them out again and again.

as ecological footprint is one of the costs that all too often is ignored

as, as usual, you digress from the subject

concentrating on the economics of a system has nothing to do with ignoring the benefits of most people
if indeed you keep the ecological footprint in the picture which includes not harming other people's interests

you will keep getting these dry answers from me as long as you keep wriggling and bringing up arguments that are totally besides the subject at hand, Rupert

But you're correct... the thread concerned the personal economics of aquaponic systems...

Not the personal views of anyone concerning "economics"... my bad... just goes to show how easily distracted we can become for the intent of the thread...

But I'd claim that it wasn't really me ... that strayed "off topic" Frank....



Will admit that discussion of "modern" economics, particularly the financial "economic" system is a red rag to me...
