They are hungry.

I think the dust would have just added a whole heap of surface area for the bacteria, would have helped a bit.

Because that's finrot (flexibacter). Look for shredded fins and redness around the mouth/fins.

Nah, not that bad. I did think of your problems when it happened, but now that the pH is more suitable for, well, everything (hovers between 6.5 & 7.5) they've stopped dying and water is MUCH clearer. I can see the snail trails easily on the bottom

P.S. Unfortunately family is away with the camera so I can't post pictures (except fuzzy mobile phone ones).

Great light Yarra.... do you think you might get a bit warm in there during summer?

And what about heat loss in winter.... I'm sure you've thought about all this

Not sure that it kept any heat in with the gal sheet in Winter anyways.
Hopefully I can cobble together a solar collector and keep it inside the shed to keep water at sensible temps during winter.
Huge sliding door will do the job in Summer.

Yep wow :)

Shadecloth can be hung over the roof for heat control in summer.

A bit of organic matter floating on top confused the camera's focus, I think - but you can still see the shiny sides of the mussels' shells and their trails.

When you want shade - I can recommend hessian, about 1/3rd the cost of shadecloth :)

I visited UY's AP on Friday (to pick up some freshwater mussels) - it's damn impressive. That shed is no backyard shed, it's freakin' huge. The door - it's freaking huge, the fish - are small - but the potential - is huge!

By the way UY, if you think it's going to get really hot in there, have you considered barra? Scott (etc) is doing it down in adelaide, and I dare say our summers are same if not hotter.

I must not have looked at this thread over the last month and a bit. Awesome greenhouse Uncle Yarra. That lazerlight must have cost you a fortune.

The height you have is fantastic - you'll be able to grow anything.
