Habitat
Usually in clear flowing streams with a sand, gravel or boulder bottom. Will form loose schools in pools and runs, solitary amongst rocks or at the stream edge. Has been found over a mud bottom in quieter reaches.

Can tolerate water temperatures up to 32°C and has been found in small ponds and streams surrounded by thick snow on the Bogong High Plains and Mount Buffallo in Victoria.

Distribution
Widespread through southern Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia.

Has been recorded from sea level up about 1800 m. Can be locally abundant in patches across its wide range, especially in areas with little or no trout.

In both Victoria and New South Wales, trout appear to have fragmented the range of G. olidus into isolated populations. In many areas trout occupy the main body of the stream and mountain galaxias are confined to places inaccessible to trout such as above waterfalls or other barrier

Does anyone know what these are?

Before anyone decides to be smart:

1. Yes I know they are not fish.
2. Yes I know that they are Deer.

What sort of deer?

There are three known options in my area and I've been searching for these babies over my back fence for 4+ years. Best I ever got was tracking some of them to the top of the hill you can see from my front door

In NZ they go by various names.... pest, venison or for those that tried to farm them...

Either way the solution was/is to shot the damn things.....

Yes venison I know, why do you think I have trying to find them for over four years.

What are they though? I know they are not fallow deer because they are too big for starters and don't have the markings of fallow deer. I'm sure they will taste good when I finally bag one but in the mean time I'd really like to know what sort of deer they are.
