Hi Hunter
Good to hear your homebrewed electronics are working as planned.
I just finished making a 12v photocell switch on veroboard (stripboard) which cost all of a fiver including the relay..and it actually works
Your 12v timer sounds pretty interesting too, is it based on a 555 timer chip?

for those of you who are not familiar with electronics, take a look at small PLC's
like Siemens Logo!
standard version has 8 inputs and 4 outputs that you can all program separately
with all the timers (week, day, year and sheer limitless switching possibility of these timers) and counters and conditional switching you can dream of
built in screen on which you can program warnings like "water too hot" or "time for a beer"
http://www.automation.siemens.com/logo/index_76.html

if you have trouble with programming I can lend a hand

At work we have half the factory automated with Siemens logo. The system is very scalable and easy to learn/use. For now I'm playing around with dwarf boards, which are equipped with a PIC18F252 micro processor, very nice toy for gadget freaks like me ;)

yes, you'll have to learn the programming language to program them, but the creator of the dwarf boards has created a programming language especially for the boards, which is quite easy to learn.

But yes, you are right, they are not for everyone. The Siemens logo systems are way easier to program with just a few mouseclicks
