Sorry to hear about your set backs over winter Jim. Reading about your experiences does however help others planning an AP system in Canberra and surrounds. We have had a one bath tub system running off an existing garden pond for a few months now. The system cycled fine and we have had nitrates of 5-10 registering but there has been next to no plant growth over the last couple of months. As the goldfish pond is going to be no good for eating fish we are in the planning/design stages of a 'proper system' at the moment. The experiences of you and others in the Canberra region over winter have confirmed for us that we need to sort out insulation and heating of the system as part of this process.

gemmell, not sure if insulating the grow beds will improve things much? Wouldn't the surface area of the grow media be more the root of the problem? I really like the water heaters you and Jim created.
