Hi Folks, a friend asked an interesting question.

Can turtles be used for aquaponics? The make a lot of waste but one thing I am unfamiliar with is if they produce waste that can be converted to nitrates. Any ideas?

Turtles around here tend to wander a fair bit, maybe less so if the pond doesn't dry up (aka AP tank) - probably depends on the species. Probably eat other things in the tank, too.

Woops didnt answer the question :D

Yes they can be used. There are some disease concerns, but no less than using chooks poo to feed fish.

Someone has to ask will you be eating the turtle? apparently they're quite tasty!

I would research turtle/human pathogen links first....that said freshwater fish are not without risk either.
In fact nothing is really safe, I better get back in the bubble and eat only processed food......

Just be informed and understand the risks before you rush in OK!

Good luck with it test pilot! hope to see how it goes.
