Just finished setting up my new AP unit... from BYAP... very good sales, service informative people.. anyway, just went and got some silver perch (14) about 8" long each. Had them split in 3 x 50L containers for transport.. as soon as i got them home (about 40 min drive) i whacked an air stone in each of them, pulled out about 10-15L of their home water from each tub and over the space of 25 minutes, i added some of my water by increments of 5L every 5 minutes to acclimatise... all went well.
left them for about 10 minutes with over half new water (mine) then slowly introduced them to tank.. Woo Hoo I have fish!
after about 20 minutes i have noticed a few of them are trying to wheelstand up the sides of the tank in .. a bit for freedom????? the dog looked amused but i am slightly concerned that one will wheelstand all the way up and over to be met by the dog and.. Game Over. the water level is probably 7 inches from the top. Are they just testing out their new tank???

got a laugh outta that!

might be concerning if they are still doing it 24 hrs later.

dumb question, but water in your system was de-chlorinated and of an acceptable PH? and you have enough 02 in there?

would love a picture of the wheelstand perch :)

They start by having a look up... then they just swim like mad .... straight up.. over 3/4 length out of water.. i put food in for them straight away just to relieve the initial shock of new home... will have to build a fish fence on top of tank i think. the silvers above look good.. how old? what are you feeding them?

My goldies I just sat the bucket in the water and tilted it to the side. Freedom. But they did have a 40km trip with not that much water. They do settle down after a while. Ours are playing follow the leader now. Even come up to the surface to look at us as we go by. :cyclopsani:

Thought there might have been a little snack involved Stevesmartt.....

The first pic is a Silver Bream, the second is a Silver Perch... both at the Natfish Trenayr campus Grafton....

Chances are, with the perch being 8"... they're used to being fed... and will come to the side of the tank whenever they think they might be fed...

Do you have a test kit Steve... and is your system cycled??...

I know you've only got 14 fish... not sure what sized fish tank you got 1000ltr or 3000ltr???

But even so, it's general practice... not to feed the fish... for at least a day after transport....

They will be stressed from their travels, excitable.... metabolising faster and excreting elevated levels of ammonia wastes...

Hold off, make sure you've got lots of oxygen going on in the tank... and try to let them settle in... with out too many enquiring glances....
