RedFin Perch is not listed as "noxious" in NSW... although it is a declared pest...

In the above link DPI wrote:
Don’t transfer redfin between waterways or introduce them into farm dams. New populations of redfin can quickly build up to large numbers, leading to stunted fish which are poor angling and poor eating and replace other recreational species.

Don’t use live redfin (or any other live finfish) as bait in freshwater - it’s illegal and carries a high risk of infesting new areas with redfin.

Obtain a permit to stock fish – and buy fingerlings from a registered hatchery to prevent contamination with unwanted species.

Don’t return redfin to the water – large redfin are good sport and eating fish and there are no bag or size limits on them. Please keep ALL redfin you catch and don't release them into our waterways or dams.

Prevent unwanted hitchhikers – check, clean, and dry boats and gear between waterways. Ensuring your boat and trailer are free of weed before re-launching can help avoid the possibility of spreading redfin eggs and juveniles.

Assist efforts to restore our rivers (which can help native fauna to out-compete redfin and other pest fish), for example by taking part on a RiverCare or LandCare project or by conserving and restoring riparian vegetation on your own land.

Take part in native fish restocking programs with your local angling group.

If you find what you believe is a redfin perch Report it!

Reckon that should about clear things up ...

Hi Rupe Have i started somthing good, redfin in victoria are a much better propersion in victoria than silvers,

Hi Jim,
have you been able to compare growth rates between Redfin and say Silver Perch?
What size were the Redfin you caught?
How far did you transport them?
Did you supply air in any form?
What do you feed them?
many thanks in advance for any advice you can put into this debate.
Alex

Hi Alex, size approx 10 cm, distance 10km, and air ,hard to feed but they will adapt to pellets, groth rate is slower than silvers, but i have some silvers that havent grown very much in 2 years,

Hi Alexmac,

intresting stuff. It may come down to just trying the reddies out in our climate, in our systems.

We can set up some type of recording system and document our growth/weight results.

I have seen some intresting results with native fish in tanks. The same may go with the reddies. When they got to a size where they could take a whole glass shrimp instead of pieces their growth rate sped up. There may be a point in their growth where they need a variety of sizable food items to stimulate growth. They have a big mouth for a reason?

This is one reason I'm breeding goldfish in my pond, fishfood :) .

We know that natives are effected by the virus but are brown trout? I would like to try some in one of my sump tanks if they are suitable?

god bless froggo

As far a I can tell natives have been shown to get infected in lab tests but not found in wild. Trout and redfin infection outbreaks have been found outside of lab tests. I think both brown and rainbow would be at risk. I would not mix the two.

Hi novaris,

thanks I didn't know that. Quite intresting this thread.

I know that larger trout target reddies as food. It wasn't until I realised this that I started to catch the larger trout on immitation redfin lures. Once I started using 10cm lures the size of the trout I was catching jumped from 2-3 pound to 6-7 pound average. I wonder if eating infected fish would pass on the virus to the trout?

God bless froggo.

The plan was to net some Reddies up near Cobram but when we got to the site no Reddies. There were hundreds there two weeks ago.

Our contact told us that the DPI must have poisoned the fish. He had gone out last week to get some but they had gone. He then informed us that they were all suffering from the virus with visible lesions.

We informed him that we would not be interested in sick fish.
He went on to tell us that some would die but most would get over it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry guys but we will keep looking. The window of finding suitable sized fish is fast closing.

I have reddies in my dam which is pretty low at the moment so i dont know if they will have been breeding. I have caught them up to 35cm but havent tried fishing this season yet. I have caught them in yabbie traps before, and now is probably a good time to try if they have been breeding. My system is not ready (reddie  ) for fish yet, but i will have get the fishing rod out this week and see what happens.

I can't offer them in high numbers, but should get enough for a good trial. I am told the fish were introduced to the dam from the Moorabool River (about 1km away), but they were in the dam before i got here and ive never fished the river.

I shall report back.

Hi steve,

I'm going out this week to have a look around for some reddies. I know several places where you can catch 20-30 per hour on small spinners. The often seem to be around the 100mm mark.

It's a bit hit and miss but I often catch them in numbers while targeting trout/natives/big reddies.

I will let you know how I go,

God bless froggo.
