Matt

Just have one turning - powered off a windmill- in the tank? Isolated unit merely to increase DO..... Sound good to you?

You have the right idea, the whole pump contained in the tank....OD of the coil will need to be larger if the depth of water were to be increased.

Sorry Matt.... What does "OD of the coil mean"? :D Something about diameter?

OK thanks C1! Thought it was something like that... :D

What diameter would you say for a depth of say 1.5 meters?

A coil pump might just make a good aerator within a tank too

sounds complicated and far fetched
would take lots of room
cost would be prohibitive: would take ages of return on investment

besides everybody keeps telling (and so do I) that a well designed AP system has no need for extra aeration

and when would you use it?
if there is enough wind, you will have enough pumping (of water), thus enough aeration

if there isn't ...
your coil aerator will not work either

sorry if I spoil a dream

No spoiling :D All inputs welcome. I still want to know the ratio of diameter to depth. All this is very new to me and I love to understand better.

Don't think costs would be high at all.... such a simple design! Could make it myself. :D So little in fact that ROI would not even feature. :flower:

I seem to have read some differing opinions on whether extra DO - usually in discussions about airstones - is required in a big system

You have me convinced! No using wind to drive it.... PEDAL POWER! :D :compress: :D

Its not the size of the systm, its the amount of fish. Less fish, wont require supplemental air, more fish probably will.

in which case I would increase the pumping, not the aeration
increasing the pumping will remove more solids from your fish tank AND bring in supplemental air

win win

but I may have pointed that out before somewhere :D

I'd have to set one up to play with and test. 2-3 PSI would be my guess for pressure at that depth. Maybe 30" OD with 8 coils, getting smaller. Can't say if it is needed, just an idea of what could be done.

Ha, you plan to use it with your bicycle !

ever thought of equipping your bicycle with OVAL wheels?

would let you drive a piston pump !

You used to be able to rent these bicycles (amongst other funny ones) on the Belgian coast during summer holidays

spectacular sight !

You don't give up easily, do you?
neither do I, so we're two of a kind :)
How far are you away from the river, Chelle?
and is your access upstream or downstream?
if you are not far away and downstream, you could use the river power to pump your AP water back to your top tank:
have your sump right there next to the river, have a paddle wheel in the river and the coil pump in the sump, connect them with an axis and off you go
will probably be more reliable than wind
use the bike with the oval wheels only to have your family and visitors have a little fun watching you
