Hi All,

just a quick snap of the backyard. I think we may have had enough rain this week, we have filled our new 2,500 lt rainwater tank and judging by the amount of water we have laying around we may need to look at putting in some drainage.

Evening All,

just thought we would give everyone a quick reminder that it is only 14 weeks to christmas :flower:

We have our first broccoli head appear, very exciting. Is it our imagination or does anyone else think that the leaves are very large. Sorry we have no experience in broccoli and it could be quite normal.

With this years weather we were lucky enough to be able to plant the broadbeans early. These are the dwarf variety so we are very glad not to have put them in the system.

wow , those leaves do seem really big , but hey, the broccoli is nearly ready for picking in a week or so. The leaves can be used in stir frys, so can the stalk, just peel the outer layer of bark of, it tastes great. I had broad beans in my system, and it was a happy day in the yard when I ripped them out, never got one bean off of the plants what so ever, need the frost to get the beans to form, so I was told at a later date. :geek:

Thanks Jessy never thought of using the leaves before.

I have just been in trouble as i forgot the most important photo (silly me). We are trying a small hydroponic system, too much time on our hands i think. He spent hours making it and setting it up, and what do i do, forget.

i have never seen broadies look like that. did you plant them all really close together for them to look like that? If so maybe they grew longer because they wanted more light! they look a tad leggy.

very curious.

Use to spend a lot of time checking crops of broad beans. They never look that tall. Better than safflower for walking through. You must have good soil there.

Last year we found that between the weather and the weight of the bean pods the branches were heading towards the ground with some snapping. This year we thought we would fence them in with a little string.

Maybe we should cut the tips out to stop them getting any taller.

Hi Hopefulls, I found my brassics went nuts. Like most crops i spose, they essentially have a genetically determined period for growth before fruiting/flowering. My theory is bc we are constantly watering/feeding them, they grow faster in the same period than they ordinarily would. You don't get more leaves, (as this is genetically pre determined as well,) so the leaves you do get are bigger. Any how, that's what I reckon.

I have had broadies that big. Brace them to the fence with a couple ropes around if you can. It will dramatically increase ur yield if they have that little bit of support. You just need some spring wind atm and it will flatten them.

How are the fish doing?
