well now, this was interesting......................

since the set up of my new system i've had approx 35 trout in the 3000L tank with the pump turning off at 8pm and back on at 8am (partly for the noise, partly for the power) I have NOT had supplemental air in the tank as i figured that the number of fish for the water volume was quite low.

as mentioned three trout were found dead yesterday morning, assumed it was all the rooting around with the loosing water. Was at a mates place on the other side of town last night and realised how warm it was when we were sitting outside at midnight. went and checked and it was 20.0C. got back at 3:30am and found all the trout gulping for air. turned the pumps back on 15on/45off and they were fine within 5 mins. measured that water temp at midday today ad found it at 18C

WOW

having the 1000L IBC buried must have mad a HUGE difference to the summer temps!
I originally buried the IBC to gain heat during winter, but as i had trout WELL into the 30C ambients last year i'm tipping it made more of a difference in keeping the tank cool.

Granted the 3000L tank was only half full with at least 4 times the growbed space as the IBC system but still....................

Have put the pumps on 15/45/24h for the moment and will put airpump and temp monitor inas well.

Might be that i'll move the trout into the old IBC system for the rest of the season soon...........

F&F, can you tell me what your system temp was late last night or this morning?

Steve 16.9 this morning and 18.5 this evening

not at all jim, i'd like you to but in more often!!

not sold on the EC thing. As you know EC is simply a measure of Electrical Conductivity. It can be easily related to nutrient strength in hydroponics because you are using KNOWN fertilizers and.or ratios.

Let me put it to you this way, if you got an EC of 5.0 due to addition of SALT and then measured another system with an EC of 5.0 from the nutrients they would be vastly different issues.

Do me a favour, dissolve 10gm of salt into 10L and measure the EC for me. This will be 1ppt salt which is commonly used and is known to be beneficial.

Thanx for the temp reading too. :)

I'm definitely not sold on the EC reading thing being bad for fish since salting to 3 ppt will cause my bluelab truncheon to read way off the EC scale which goes up to 3.6

I expect that salting to 1 ppt will give an EC reading somewhere around 2.

Now if you are putting your fish into a hydroponics system with hydroponics nutrient, or if your are adding hydroponic nutrient into a system with fish in it, then I suspect that you need to keep the EC radings really low since there are usually substances in those nutrients that we know can be very bad for fish.
