Hi All
A friend of mine is very interested in running a trial project raising fish and yabbies. but is not interested in edible plants but wants to raise to raise plants that will supplement the fish feed rather than for human consumption. Suggestions and ideas would be great!

What about grain products? What about fast growing grass for a worm farm?
Any ideas?

Get a lawn mower - head around to Steve's place, free grass clippings, happy Steve (just don't leave him in charge of said lawn mower)


Jaymie put up an idea on her system thread of using bird seed etc, there is also rice, most of the grains would have a fast growing rate if coupled with an AP setup

Put your friend onto this site lets nut this idea out I believe it's neccessary for the future of aquaculture.

Plants feed omnivores we cant keep fishing the oceans for meal. My city alone the consumer demand for fish rises by 25 million in product per annum...

I envision the omnivorous species can be utilised in 2 ways - human consumption and waste as fish meal for carnivorous species.

Well he hates PC's so ill be doing all the PC work for him.

I guess the first thing is selection of non fussy omnivorous species you are allowed in Bali that perform well in Aquaculture (added advantage of co-related industry research on raising said species normally found after searching the web).

Then you get the required protein/carb ratio of your fish, plus micronutrients...

and start tossing all types of plant matter to these fish whilst making scientific ehmming noises and writing it all in your book. When fish eat something it's worth investigating what's in it, otherwise why bother...

Upon discovering a bunch of stuff you can grow that your fish will eat you then get it all tested for nutritional value, and find out what proportions you need for that particular species diet. You may still need to supplement. Continue seeking planting alternatives to supplementation as you go.

If you have no lab just get one tank of fish on meal and another (or several more) eating plants.

You can tell if most plants will grow in Aqua simply by googling if it's been grown in hydro.

And a good way to find out things you'd not think they'd eat.

Search for things like "stomach contents of" and "natural diet" typed in with the species name.

Grass carp eat grass. This'd be easy to grow, what's the best grass though, with the best ratio of protein for them, then you're winning.

Any advice on OZ fish that will do ok eating plants?
Currently in Brisbane - Jonathan is the one having all the fun in Bali right now &$#^#&%@^&....

My biggest jade that was found floating in the outside tnak was layed to rest on a beautiful bed of peatmoss, and covered with rich earth...........
It was inside the worm farm
