Back to the subject of rice, I never buy rice grown in Australia, because they use the precious water from the murray river and 95% of it is evaporated and not transpirated (through the plant). The water is only used to keep the weeds down, which works fine in a tropical climate. It is a really sad sight when I ride past the rice fields of NW NSW and see the water evaporation from up to 5km from the paddock.

Buy rice grown in tropical areas of the world.

If you wanted to grow rice from seed collected fron the NSW fields, you will need to PAY a multi national company for the privilage!

An excellent book on Rice is "The one straw revolution" by a Japanese author who's name I can't remember tonight, which shows that there are alternative methods to the shitty rice growing methods we use today.

The author's name is Masanobu *now Paul, stop that*. My dog-eared copy of "The One Straw Revolution" was published by Rodale Press in 1978.

Good read GD? can you give us a slightly more indepth description of the book? Maybe an example of one of the other ways of growing rice he recommends?
