SO, who in Victoria within 1.5hrs of Melbourne is willing to catch Redfin and sell them to me?

I'd be after 50 or so. what would be a fair price to ask?

Hi Steve,
No doubt you have read the warnings that I posted. You may not be able to have native fish if you have Redfin due to the supposed virus they carry. It will kill the natives and the Redfin if it breaks out.
I will give you 50 when I get some. Katunga is more than two hrs from Melb. It will do you the world of good to get out and see the real world. Getting them for nothing should be enough incentive to come up when I or Froggo have some.
Just give me enough time to complete this move and settle down.
I did have a good supply lined up near Kyneton but the rain at the weekend has washed them away. Will recheck when it dries off a bit.
We could maybe make a day of catching some if they are there.
They are an hour and abit from Melb.

himzol they will eat anything, one should have no problem getting them onto pellets.

Alex

I got no problem in getting out and seeing the real world...........except that when ever i do i end up spending two nights on realestate.com.au looking for a rural property (spewing i passed up that 40 acres in heathcote :()

50  so you're confident of getting lots then? tell me more!

i could have my arm twisted to go fishing if there was odd of actually catching that amount!

The only reason i dont like fishing is because the only thing i ever caught was a cold!

Hi Steve,
50+++ yes. When you get onto them at this time of the year you can find lots of 2/3/400. If a couple of us get together we can in the future breed our own replacements plus feeder fish.
A friend was checking his cattle last week and noticed a small pool of water at the end of a culvert that was full of Redfin 8cm's long he bucketed them back into the creek. The creek has had a good flow of water down it over the weekend. Will not know for a week or so if they are still there.
We may have to put together a transport package. They are tough but like their oxygen supply to be pretty well spot on.
I would suggest that Froggo will be in like Flynn.
I have to get settled into Katunga before I can do much.
By the way in the past I acted as a consultant finding properties for clients. Also inspecting properties to make sure that they were suitable for the buyers plans.
My advice forget the Heathcote area too dry. Water supply very poor. Very cold zone.

yeh, but it was close ;) and it had a 20meg dam that was full  LOL it was big enough to put a boat in :) place also had a 20 or 30 fruit trees (not looked after) set up with irrigation. The reason i felt it was good is because it was less than an hour away (i wouldn't have moved there) and was big enough for me and a mate to share. nice to have a week-ender / holiday'er that you can work on.

anyway back to the redfin. now you're getting me really excited. bucketing them out........far out.

What time frame are you looking at? and i assume as the weather warms and water levels drop a bit?

Ron will let me know when the creek is low enough to get a good look. He has a small drag net to check out some of the holes when the water drops.
A couple of weeks. We will not be able to wait much longer as they will move.

Looks like I read it right then so I can keep them but theyre rated as being a bit on the evil side  sound ok for this area cold winters and bloody hot summers, was going to use silvers or jade if I set up at Coffs but different weather here. The virus is a bit of a worry though?

Ok in Victoria mate but do not know about NSW. You will have to check with the fish people at the NSW DPI (For general fishing information, call the Fisheries Information Line on 1300 550 474.)
The virus is a worry but should not be a problem if you take good care of your stock.
Feed well, do not put them under stress, keep the water clean/clear they do not like dirty/muddy water.
Exactly the same form of management that should be used for all livestock in your care.

Going through the various areas of the DPI NSW site it appears to me that Redfin although classed as pests are not classed as noxious and it would appear to my reckoning that they may be kept in an enclosed system?? I have been known to be mistaken on interpretation( But wife i thought you said i should buy that ....... :blackeye: ) Anybody with a definitive answer? and where can i getem?

Some how I missed this entry and Rupert's reply.

there was a very interesting 3 day International Percid Fish Culture Workshop in January in Belgium at which I participated:
http://www.percid.be/
you can find a lot of info there as well as two excellent handbooks that cover all culture aspects in the download section:

one on perch:
http://www.percid.be/Aquaculture.pdf

the other on pike perch (sander, walleye):
http://www.percid.be/Handbook%20Pikeper ... uction.pdf

regularly visit this site as I expect more publications to come

make sure you have enough aeration when you transport them: they die easily!

happy reading

For those of you that are considering using Redfin I suggest that you read the report at the following site. You can skip the first thirty pages without missing the important parts. Growth rates market size etc.
