thanks jim sorry to here about the fish, i quess you are adding salt to your system it got rid of my fungus .. :) i ended up using 50 mil coupling male and female i stuck 300 mil 50 mil pipe for inside drain with a 3 mil hole for drainage works well. i was using a plug system for the drain but switched to the coupling, i find the 50-40 mil pipe in the center is a better fit, as well slows the drainage .
cheers
mizzie

Guys, my silvers were all much less than 100mm last winter, basically no food for several months, water down to 8°C.
Not a single casualty.

Could be that my temps are more stable due to tank in shed/gb's in greenhouse combo. Could be that I was very lucky. Maybe 90 fish, total less than a kilo, in a large system kept the water quality very high.

Just thought I'd point out that lowish temps don't always kill small silvers.

Tend to think you're probably right Steem... Les has also managed his Silvers through winter... again with a tank in shed/gb's in greenhouse combo....

I think it's the sudden temperature changes that are lethal... fish are probably stressed at their lower limits and weakened by not feeding...

leaving them vunerable to any other detremental factors or sudden changes....

You can see the effect of a sudden drop in both barometric pressure and air temperature on the water temperature in an exposed tank (although covered) in the graph below... from my solar array experiment...

sorry to hear Jim. The worst is nearly behind us. I have been suprised not to lose any fingerlings this winter. As others have said I think it is the volume of water in the system and relative temp stability not cold temps as such. Warm weather on the way soon. :D

Well, I must say that since converting the large system over to a much bigger single tank - virtually no dead silvers have been pulled out - so there is something in the argument for temp swings while cold causing deaths

Bit of a bummer Jim....

Everything else is looking pretty good... as usual...

Looks like you're not running any hydro any more... how do you rate the autpots compared to hydro....

Might be an unfair comparison I suppose, .... in terms of relative space???
