Y in cross section Mean, with holes on the tail of the Y to attach wire.
A little woried about that design Stuart in that it might push itself apart or bend on the long sides, and again push itself apart. Any chance of getting something to box it together, thinnish C channel?

Was working on one of my GB's today and I was wondering how deep I should hammer the star pickets. Here is one I've allready done.

The picket on the left is 5'6" long and is only about an inch or two into the ground (jammed it there by hand). The picket on the left is also 5'6" long but is 4' into the ground leaving 16" above ground.

Did I get carried away?

Good effort.
I've put SP in 1/3 of the way and getting them out was a nightmare. Hope it's in the right stop. 8)

The rest of the story is as follows.

I had half a picktet and I was banging that in when it suddenly shot down 4" and then when I pressed down on it it sunk further. So it pulled it out (yes normally thats difficult but knot this time) and put a full length one in its place which you can now see is about an inch or two below where it should be (yellow builders line)

The next picket was the same. First 1' and 1/2 requires heavy hammering and then the next 3' is really soft. I have no idea what is under there.

Do I want to know? Suggestions any one? After all this is where one of my GBs is going.

Stuart

Have you got water running underneath? When we have very heavy rains the water flows below soil level but underneath that is coffey rock and clay so the surface can look dry but water is flowing sideways above the impermeable level.

That was my first thought Sleepe and I was hoping that was the case because I need the water. However after pulling the full length stake out and putting it back a couple of times, with relatively no trouble which is a worry, I couldn't see any mud or clay or anything on the end except the red soil which is at the surface.

I should go and have a look at my well. Four weeks ago it was bone dry to the bottom, might have changed with all this rain.

Woke up to a light covering over the ground of snow this morning. By 9ish it had melted but since 9:30 it has been snowing again someitmes rather heavily. Which means no power tools so I'm busy digging holes.
