About 8 or so years ago I established an extensive herb garden on a property I was renting – it was around this time that I started to look at permaculture and natural remedies for every day aliments. I purchased a fantastic, ratty old book from a garage sale that had all the herbs and their medicinal uses in it. Much to my excitement many of the infusions of herbs listed in the book worked (for things like sinus pains through to period pains (that my wife, then girlfriend, confirmed for me).
The problem is that I lost the book somewhere between moves and cant even remember its title – nor can I remember many6 of the herbal combinations…
I know that we have people on here who have been growing their own herbs (medicinal and “other “ ;) ) – my hope is that we can share on here about the beneficial uses of various herbs.
My aim is to once again build up a vast collection of herbs so as to once again take control of what goes into my body..

PLEASE NOTE

You should read up on any and all herbs etc you intend use for both medicinal and culinary purposes BEFORE using them - some have been known to react poorly with people's health or should only be used in small amounts (seriously, with some plants more is worse! )

   We value our members and do not wish that any of you get sick or worse!

I used plantain when I lived in the bush. This would relieve insect stings, poultice a wound, or a light tea for stomach upset.

I also used kawakawa a lot. For toothache. I searched for this plant's equivalent in Aussie but didn't find it.

Lavender or rosemary or both are fantastic for muscle pain in your bath water relieving me when a days labours were a bit much.

Teatree tea I used for vitamin c as I had no other source at the time.

Watercress
Watercress contains large amounts of iron, calcium and folic acid, in addition to vitamins A and C, which is why it is one of the first 'herbs' I am adding to my collection. It also has a peppery taste, not far off from the taste you get from a nasturtium

Garlic - yum, but not that crap chinese stuff you get from the supermarket. I harvested my garlic last week and it is hanging to dry now. I am gradually building up my seed stock - this year I should have enough to be able to eat quite a bit of it.

My comletely natural organic home-grown beer is reputed to cure everything from baldness to unwanted pregnancies - although if you saw a full-body shot of me these claims would quickly evaporate !! I will bravely continue this important research.
