Ghoti's web page is a Russian language education site. I took four quarters of Russian in college, and that's all I remember ha!

Registration required a website and since I administer the Russian Language one I used it. "Horror Show Daveed"

My background training was as a fisheries biologist and I ran several trout hatcheries back in Canada. I am a transplant to Columbia SC and trout will do not do well in this heat. I tried 25 years ago to get permits to get tilapia into Canada to raise (small scale) and was told no by the government as they had determined it was economically not feasible to raise in Canada and therefore wouldn't issue the necessary permits. I tried to explain to them that the economic feasibility should be my concern and since tilapia cannot live naturally in Canada's cold water they should okay it. They still said no. Today people are raising them in waste warm water effluent from their nuclear plants. I still have my info from then and I am researching and planning small scale aquaculture and aquaponics systems for use in my backyard. I just purchased a food grade IBC (intermediate bulk container) 330 gal to act as my fish tank. I plan on raising the fingerlings and maintaining a breeder colony in my fishroom and raising the fry outside from April through to October. I should be able to get 700-1000gram fish in that time. My main tanks now are for african cichlid. I have over 500 gallon in tanks but would like to move from the hobby area and move more to a small scale backyard farm with tilapia and prawns.

That sounds like a great plan. you are in a good climate so much easier to do than in Canada!

Same problem here in Northern California, although a double standard is applied for the fisheries around Southern California who are permitted to transport live tanks of Tilapia into Northern California for the Asian demand in San Francisco.

Send pictures sometime. I will be getting some posted this weekend.

Cheers

"Ochen Horror Show Ghoti" :toothy8:

Where did you get the IBCs from? How much did they set you back?

That is tragicomic about the permitting in Canada.

Oh yeah, Three Mile Island is about 45 minutes from here, maybe I should write up a business plan using its motherly warm waters?

I found it in the local trader for $50. It is just a bladder (plastic liner for metal framed IBC system) but it does have a bottom valve. 330 gallon will make a nice fish holding tank.

Thanks my friend ..

I wish I had more tanks ..

I feel cetain that these guys can help feed the world ...

Big ponds, .. solar powered aeration,

Fly traps that discharge over the pond .. water weeds ...

I think that maybe somehow, some way, there must be an easy way that this amazing fish can help poor people get protein...
