Hello everyone,

Would it be too late to introduce trout into my system this year. I really wanted to give them a go this year but I have been a bit slack getting the system together. I'm afraid if I get trout I won't be able to grow them big enough before they kark it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

lots of variables Fil, but starting with advanced fingerlings sure would help.

It would be a problem if your system isn't already cycled. An uncycled system wouldn't be able to handle the sudden increase in bioload while the temperature is this low. You'd only be able to have a few fish, then put in a warmer water fish in the spring.

Yeah my system is ready to rock. The bio filter was cycled before the system was. :-) My main concern is the weather. The trout I inquired about were 6 - 8 inches and I was told that they would would grow to plate size (350 grams I think) in 3 months. Sounds about right.

The biofilter may be cycled, but there would still be a bit of lag before it caught up with that sort of fish load. They would be pretty expensive fish to put into the system at that size, and then kill.

I would use urea / humonia and seasol to keep everything ticking along until early spring, and then add fish and go for it.

Converse to this thread title, what's the earliest recommended time to introduce trout in melbourne, to a system that is not going to be watched carefully enough to add ice if it gets to hot?

Further to that, where would I get trout? All the farms I am familiar with were in the path of the bushfires, and most trout were lost to the radiant heat.

Who can predict the weather and what temperatures you are going to get over the next month?? I'd say that early April is a safe bet just incase March gives up a few hot days.
I heard that the trout hatchery in Marysville was wiped out by the fires but havent heard of any others. Have you tried the govt hatchery at Snobs Creek near Eildon??

Troutman, i thought that pic you posted in the bushfire thread was from Eildon, on further inspection it is as you say in marysville, so perhaps the eildon farm is ok.
