LOL! That's one gigantic system.
I was imaging something neat, asthetically pleasing for my system.
A practical garden ornament. :)

A mere baby - 2,000 liters of fish tank, 2,000 liters of growbeds (I need more) and 1,000 liters of sump. You see - the forum here is "Backyard" aquaponics. I have taken this to mean it should fit in your back yard. My backyard is 50 hectares. And if that isn't enough, we have other properties that add up to more than 150 more hectares...

So, wouldn't it be a ratio of land available? For me, this might only represent a 5 gallon fish tank!

CRT (and others),
there is a small "paper" icon at the top of each post withthe word "Posted:" next to it.

If you click on that, then paste the address link, it will bring up the relevant post, instead of the whole page, like this:
CRT Spot-on cascading system

I can't for the life of me find that icon - I did nearly blue card your post though... accidently of course!

Where exactly is it please?

Last week I noticed that the shade cloth used as a fish filter on the pump inlet in my fish tank, was blocking with solids (too much food as the temperature dropped I think) and reducing the flow to the GB's.
I replaced the filter with some gutter guard plastic mesh but today had a huge HSM.....I noticed the flow had again slowed so opened the tap to full, only to see 6 minced SP's jetted into the GB. :(
The poor little buggers had no chance.

I have now added three layers of mesh so hopefully the remining 99 (or so) will be safe.
Will Monya and Dan ever forgive me.??????

Every thing else is going really well with heaps of lettuce, spinach, peppers, chillies, spring onions. chillies, tomatoes, lemon grass, parslet, coriander, etc. etc. being produced.
Have just planted winter vegies, brocolli, beans, and I am the process of adding the third (bathtub) GB.
Will post pics when it's up and running.
Still can't get past the picture of minced SP's..

Whoops  Don't I feel silly.
Just read your "fish changing behavior" thread.
Sorry about your loss.

Now, I understand your "how to keep SP's alive" comment

I have got over the big loss now Scott and have deduced that it was probably caused by a build up of solids and the change in temperature.
After cleaning the tank, I have restocked with around 15 goldies from my outdoor pond and they are keeping the winter veggies going quite nicely. I will post some pics for comparison.
Looking forward to all catching up in August. :)
When winter breaks, I'll have another go with some more of Stu's finest SP's.

I will put aside some of my finest for ya Peterall :) plus the surcharge for murdering the first lot :P

On that point, we ran an experiement with those big black tubs on a pond. We were changing the water over hourly in each tub, with water coming from a spray bar across the top. The mortality rates were large to say the least. The sludge build up was quite thick on the bottom of the tubs. The fish started to die quite suddenly. We noticed in time and got them out and only lost about 100 of 1000 fish, but considering that we are virtually losing no others in other systems bar the odd skinny one, we deduced that the large build up of solids just put too much of a load on the oxygen. Even though the fish were still feeding, they were not in good shape. Lesson learned. The more solids can be removed from the tank and got into the growbeds , the better.
