I would much rather deal with grizzlies* than the poison snakes and reptiles in Oz. It's just what you're familiar with.

* and I have spent a good deal of time camping, cooking and hiking in grizzly country.

(having said that, I very much want to visit .au and .nz...)

meh, you can get antidote for bites, bit hard to drive yourself to the ER with your guts hanging out ;)

We shouldn't even bother patrolling the northern borders........the koala's can drop out of the trees and scratch illegals eyes out, then they'll step on a snake while blundering about bind, then as they lie there waiting for respiratory failure a croc will grab them and stash them under a submerged rock for a week till they soften up..............

:)

More than likely, just complacency, just as deadly in the right environment.

Quotable quote of the Day-

I saw this in front a the church in Tulare and I just had to share- it has meaning on several levels for us, I think.

And then there's this recent "church" related news...

I realise that our US cousins have a different outlook regarding guns and gun control... but isn't this just a little bizzare???

http://www.newbethelchurchky.org/openCa ... ration.htm

They even raffled a handgun at the service on the day....

Yes, I know... I'm all for gun rights, I believe that has protected us, the U.S., from being invaded by outside armies, especially during the Cuban missile crisis and from the Japanese entrance into WWII from what I've read. Try invading a country with an armed civilian populus that feels threatened and see how far you get!!!
And as this is being typed, home invasions are becoming more common place and without some sort of self perservation, you are left at the mercy of the invaders and I would not want to depend on their "goodwill".
Being armed has it's downside as well- theives steal your weapons and use them in crimes, children getting a hold of a loaded gun and killing themselves or someone else, domestic shootings against loved ones, family are more common than shootings during the commission of a crime and guns are still the main choice in suicides, familicides, and for just going off the deep end- you choose the senario.

Religiously speaking though, a show of force with guns is not what Jesus intended- perhaps that is why he offered this advise- when your cheek is being abused by an enemy, he said to turn the other cheek and offer it as well; that and the fact he went through torture at the hands of the Romans- they were human monsters, make no mistake about that. Cruisifiction was a common form of torture for them.
Other great leaders have followed in Jesus's footsteps- Gandai, Mandella, Mohamed Nasheed, I sure there are others- all pacifists who stood up to their respective governments and paid the price, but still overcame and made their corner of the world just a little better.
Rupe, I respect that you are an Atheist- I believe that you can choose to believe in anything as long as you hurt no one else with your beliefs and sacrifical animals are humanely put to death. I am only saddened by the fact that as your life comes to a close, you will face your own death, in fear, of it's finality. Perhaps if you are lucky, it will be quick or you will have no knowledge of it happening.
I am highly religious, you know that already, but I am not a pacifist, not in the strictist sense of the word, which is my downfall- if given an option to leave peaceably, I'll not stand up against an enemy but if cornered or heaven forbid, they try to hurt an innocent in my presence, I am a lion is disguise- I can't stand by, it is not in my nature. Unfortunately, I've had experiences in my life that has proven this to be so and upon reflection, I have found that bravery is sometimes stupidity without fear but in the moment, it is what it is.
