I've started on a small test system in a small wheelie bin. Am going to use guppies first because they seem to breed like rabbits. My question is about using guppies as a pre-treatment for a larger system. I've got a 55kl pool that I want to convert. My thought is use guppies and when the system is running well then add cod or barra. They can eat the guppies instead of themselves. Plus there is no chance of my other half naming all of the guppies.

G'day mate... Not a bad idea. We ran a small wheelie bin system only using guppies and it worked well... And barra will finish them off in next to no time so your plan about them not eating one-another will work - for a day or 2
Where are you situated in Australia as certain states have 'nasty' laws relating to guppies and the like.

NSW . The place we got our saltwater fish from sells guppies. So I hope that means its okay, just don't let them go in the river.
