Solar Bug Zapper

Charging up for a day or two, will let you know how it goes - though there's not many bugs around this time of year...

Will be quite interested to see how well it works.

Would probably be ok as long as the standard battery is replaced with a better NiMH

Well, there just doesn't seem to be many/any bugs around at the moment. It certainly 'glows' well. I might have to see if I can dig up a few bugs and throw them at it to see if they get 'zapped'...

OBO it comes with a 600mA stock HPM elcheapo rechargeable battery, so I reckon your right about changing over to something a bit better.

If/when I get some bugs I'll let you know how it goes - should be good at dusk when it warms up a bit.

2500mAH NiMH = Lots of glowing + hopefully zapping.

Had a close look today and found a few small bugs stretched out between the wires, so it can at least kill small ones on contact, though they were still attached...others may have fell and blown away...

I've now got it in a pot full of gravel, on an angle, hanging over the water - I'll take some pics when I can.

Any news on the effectiveness of the Bug Zapper, please let me know.

Not really. There just aren't many bugs around at the moment.

The UV LED glows on past midnight, but I haven't been able to tell how effective it is at zapping.

If I think of it on the weekend, I'll put it out in the garden with some white paper under it and see if there is much in the way of dead bugs collected.

It doesn't appear to work as per the plugged in ones which literally fry the bugs, this one seems to just gently electrocute them.

Well, if it zaps em enough for them to fall in the water, I expect that is what you want.

I got one of those little electric fly swatter things. Looks like a tennis racket with metal strings and batteries in the handle. Sometimes the flies will still be moving after being hit. This would be good for feeding the fish as the moving bug would probably attract them.

Hopefully you get a chance to actually see the thing being effective.

Hey Mylesau, any luck with the solar bug zapper yet?

I have been thinking about putting a light in my Fish Pond to draw moths. Used to have one in my pool for night swimming but removed it cos too many moths we had to swim in!

I run a large 115v AC bug zapper over my pond. It is suposed to cover an acre. In warm weather I get more bugs that the catfish will eat and scoop lots for the chickens every morning. Another advantage of the large one is reduced bug damage to produce in the dirt garden nearby. Finally I can sit under a light in the house and read without bugs buzzing me.
I power it with the invertor and battery bank that runs my deep freezer. The battery is charged by solar. I only run the zapper at night.
