OB you will be a Goldfields trend setter, but I think banana's will do fine in Kal, may need to humidify things a little, would be interesting to see how they go with AP, I think you would have to supplement nutrients, but dbird reckons they don't use much through Hydro

nice work Don!

what is the root structure of a bannana like? is there any tree / plant you wouldn't plant in a blue barrel?
At this stage I would try anything in a pot ,I have been told that a Tasmanian blue gum will grow hydroponically but you woud need a pretty big pot.I have seen all types of fruit trees growing hydro in pots and as I mentioned before i can't see why they wouln't do the same in ap.I also have a young berry and a thornless blackberry growing very well in pots.Don.
do you have any root clogging issues?

I have had to take the return pipe off once to clean the roots out but it is not a major problem. The roots are a bit like a palm or a grass tree.

I've heard of people growing bananas as ornamental foliage plants in Zone 5. I've not heard of them managing to get any fruit without a warm greenhouse though.

We have grown bananas here in Jandakot in Western Australia where the temperature goes below zero for a few nights, so it is possible. I do think we would do much better if the weather was warmer though.

hey dbird,
Do you still have those banana plantlets?
and one question: how long did it take for your banana trees to grow that big in the GH? (I would like to know so I can be realistic here... )

Your stuff is such an inspiration, now I want to grow big things too...

Do you have any dragonfruit growing in hydro or AP. I've got a few in pots and wanted to try them out.
