You could also boil it on a camp stove (not in the house) and kill everything.

I suppose that might be a measure if you were taking urine from unknown sources or sources known to be ill though in such a situation, there might be more appropriate ways to deal. Since I am using my own, I just don't save it for use in the system if I'm ill.

People taking antibiotics or other really strong meds might not want to use their urine in such a system.

Only males can pee over plants and things with ease, even when they are a little high up in altitude.

(But peeing on plants and eating them gasp! yuck no way... you should have known this F&F )

And about the solids - does a peeponic system tell anything about the requirement of solids? (As those from AP systems)
I mean, the solids (in an AP system) can release nutes from anywhere in the system, they don't have to be near the roots right? They might even be in a separate filter?

(I myself like the solids in the growbeds but just asked in general.
But I guess there is no hard consensus on this yet...)

I've noticed a little gunk appear in the system but that seems mostly to be from algae and perhaps bio-slime layers as there is little in the way of solids being added to the system. I usually avoid pouring the precipitates from the pee bottles into the system.

As to where you want your solids and how much nutrients those solids can release directly into the water is probably not an exact science at this time. I tend to agree with those that think solids should be in the grow beds where roots can access them since not all nutrients are very water soluble.

I'm also been known to put small blobs of worm castings into my grow beds. Great sources of all sorts of micronutrients as well as tons of active microbes as well as a source of worms for my grow beds.

Actually, I do believe diluted urine is used as a cure for some plant problems sprayed on the plants though I don't know any details right offhand.

Me too me too... I have put teaspoons of worm castings in my growbeds and washed it down.
Those castings have plant growth harmone producing abilily (I think) and biodiversity and they have the stuff out of the worms that kills pathogens and encourages the 'good' bacteria...
And worm mucus that may coat gravel and help the biofilm develop in or on it?

Worm castings are also a great way to start seeds.

* The difference between a peeponic system and a hydroponic system is that we also take pains to grow not just the plants but also the nice bacteria and we love symbioic bio-relationships like the mycorrhizal fungi in the system...

And another thing in general:
Speaking of urine so many times I was suddenly reminded of an old Indian (here) traditional medicine (ayurveda? don't know) that needed people to take a sip of fresh cow urine. I don't know for curing what (jaundice?) but some internet search will tell you.

This was very prevalent, I remember it being practiced once in the villages when I was a kid. I have mostly grown up in the city and haven't seen much of this.

Wow the guys who invented this long ago possibly knew fresh urine was sterile! I wonder how the person who discovered this, possibly several centuries ago, took the first experimental sip!

Maybe the minerals in urine, potassium and all that help get rid of deficiencies and thus boost the plants immunity...
But what I am afraid of is that no bacteria are converting this urine on the leaves (unlike in the growbeds) and what if icky stuff grow on it (like you posted earlier about one of your aged bottles). But if its diluted well, no problem I guess...

Do you think starting them well is important?... I think they could be started with low nutes (like a wet sponge) (if you really have to, not on purpose) but they need nutes-support later on. What I mean is that seeds usually have stored food in them and can possibly grow out of distilled water, but when bigger they sure need good care?

Just a question, I don't mean seeds have to be started badly on purpose.

Summary : Is starting seedlings well have any effect on their later growth?

I don't remember this skin problem when I was an actual athelete. Probably too busy checking out the gals.

And yes, urine can be an effective antifungal.

Many types of seed can be difficult to get to germinate but it seems that the many complex compounds in worm castings are good at getting seeds to germinate. One method of getting an avacado pit to germinate is to just throw it into your worm bin.

Seeds don't need much nutrient to get started, actually too much strong nutrient is probably detrimental to germination. However, worm castings are not strong, you can't burn your plants with it like many fertilizers will. They make a nice moist soft material for germination. The only real problem I've found with them in seed germination is that if a tray of them are put into a flood and drain situation, they will probably stay way too wet and rot most seeds before they germinate. Oh, and ants love them so if you leave a bucket of worm castings around, be careful before sticking your hand into them.

Urine is often used in "folk" medicine. It is also useful for many other things. Where modern culture has come up with the idea that anything leaving the body must immediately be disposed of or we would all die some gross unthinkable death, I do no know. And where modern culture thinks we are safely disposing of this "waste" I'm not sure either since most of it just gets chemicals added and then diluted back into the water supplies in a hope that dilution will make everything safe again.

Ah well, I'll do what I can on my little plot and if the collapse happens, perhaps I can teach other's what to do to grow their own food again.
