Nah - in all reality it may be fine as it is - but I personally would prefer to overengineer a bit that have to dismantle and do again (which is a serious pain in the arse). I also wanted to make sure with mine that even the stand that currently has clay in the bed, can take gravel if I want to change it over at a future time.

really? 3? to be honest i really CBF ;) the beds are in place and i'm ready to drill and fill when i get home...........

of course if you guys honestly think that they wont hold then i'll do it.

i'm planning on using 3/4 scoria and 1/4 clay.

the scoria is about the same density as the clay.

the single centre support really seems to brace it well..........

I think the 3 supports would be neede for say blue metal

Hi Steve if using scoria or simler go for 3 now is the time to do it.
BTW do you still want some channel.
Regards Jim.

Steve just 2 bob's worth i think 8mm scoria is better than 20mm.

Right, so if you've been following cod fish's thread then you'll know that i went out to measure my salinity and found my pump almost stopped.

i had given it a freshen up yesterday.

notes to self:

trim grass so it doesn't overhang INTO tank

partially blocked pump intake grill acts as grass filter

40 watt rio pump will not insinkerate grass

grass in impeller drastically reduces speed ;)

putting all the above into a complex formula has yielded the result of "if it aint broke, dont fix it"

As mention my measured salinity was 10ppt, now this is not a 100% correlation to NaCl conc, but i think it would be close, maybe minus a ppt or two for nitrate, KH and GH . my tank has also dropped to 50% capacity so on top up 5ppt will be closer to the mark

Steve, can you check your salinity again after you top the water up please, I'm guessing that the amount of salt stays fairly constant but the ppt varies as the water level fluctuates, minus a bit over time through the plants etc
good catch on the pump, another reason for SWMBO why I must check my system every chance I get!

SWMBO?

cod, i will do salinity tests on the new system when up and running, the old one's readings are probably skewed by the turbidity too.

F&F measures regularly and has posted a per month salinity LOSS in your other thread.

Monya, get bent ;)

After a discussion with Joel and being reminded that I was the one that suggested one support was not enough when HE was building stands i HAVE decided to add another two ;)
