Beeso, I misunderstood the use of feeding kids and missed the soil part :flower:

Jaymie, thanks, it is soooo good to be back. The trip went ok, just glad to be home.

If you chuck it in the garden, why not set up a little "pit" that you can throw the dog droppings, some cardboard or shredded paper and the odd bit of veggie scraps into? Seed it with a few thousand compost worms, and you have a functional worm farm that will break down the poo much quicker than what it would in the yard. Obviusly keep it far from the veggies and do not use it for anything, just a decomposition aid.

Great Idea Steve! I might do that as currently they (doggy doos) just get put in a bag and into the rubbish bin.

Also, did you buy a worm farm or did you make one? I'm considering getting one because I haven't set up a compost pile at my new place and wondering what the best option would be, are worms good?

Sorry for ten million questions as usual... ;)

i have bought two................IMO the first one is not any better than a compost bin

The second one is the stuff :) it is called can-o-worms (i think) I'm not sure if the company still sells it, but i bought it from ebay for $50.

Pictures tell a thousand words, i'll post some when the boss gets back :)

did you mean (which) worms are good?

apparently the tiger worms excrete a foul smelling slime that turns off predators (including fish), i must have red worms then (in the farm, not personally :)) LOL

It only take me 5 mins to gather about 20 to feed to the fish :) they loooove them :)

LOL You buy everything on ebay! :) I might need to get 'converted' i'm afraid of ebay because everyone who starts........ gets addicted.

Sorry about the fractured sentence in my previous post, I just read back through and it made no sense!

Fortunately I have read this thru thread so I know reds are the go for fishies (when they eventually happen at my place!) :) but I just meant are worm farms a good alternative to compost bins? I just figured it may kill two birds with one stone if I went that way...

hi GLR, worms are proving to be a good alternative food source for the fish as well as being useful in demolishing the food scraps from the AP grow beds(Ridley's get put further on the back burner)

Woot! Thanks for the info Ell and Steve! :o)

Ell, what type of farm do you have (if any?)

I just don't want to go do the bunnings thing and be disappointed. I will also look up the can'o'worms on the 'net to see if i can find a stockist...

Relin make those - they make several different sized worm farms infact... KMART often carry them (but not all)

Worm farm?
I was really trying to keep quiet about that, have a worm kill rate that pales the attempts of Muzz & co.
Had large beds raised in the garage and used a timer to provide water, timer got stuck open, worms committed suicide dives onto concrete floor so switching to AP.

Don't have a farm att but will slowly get back into it for AP

Info on Can of Worms for u:
http://www.vermico.com/bins_&_tools.htm

You can knock up something made of timber if you're not interested in catching the liquid

to add to that - when you learn to scale and gut the fish, you can then feed it to the worms :rr:

LOL, you have a good memory for my incompetence/inexperience! ;o)
But it's cool that the worms will 'process' even that stuff!

Thanks for the link, cheers!

our problem will be letting the chooks know that they will have to share the scraps with the worms, without the chooks eating all the worms before the fish can eat the worms!
