I wonder if something like this could be used to power and aerate a backyard aquaponics system?

It looks/sounds like something like that might be able to provide a little extra something, but you still need the original water flow to run it in the first place.

While it shows that the generator can produce 41VDC, the power used to pump the water is not discussed.
Unless there is a natural, adequate flow and fall of water, this will not provide an energy surplus. It is basically a "low head" water turbine.

There are commercial water turbines available which have been optimised for specific flows and pressures (head). All would be more reliable than the home built units displayed in the videos.

If you have the flow, make it up, can't hurt to try it out.

Well, anytime you can splatter some water you get some extra air in it. It would be neat to recovers some lost energy.

I wish I had a natural stream to build a water vortex generator in..
