FYI

To the untrained eye and taste buds nile perch is similar to barramundi in appearance and flavour. Nile perch is imported into Australia from Lake Victoria in Africa, while barramundi is caught or farmed in Australia or imported from New Guinea and South East Asia. Barramundi can cost twice as much as nile perch, so if a wholesaler or retailer/restaurateur were to sell their nile perch as barramundi they would make a greater profit.

Also no live Nile perch are allowed in Australia

And would be operating totally illegally if they did so..... dob the bastards....

Lots of dodgey fish labelling use to occur.... and Nile Perch could be anything from Bassa, shark...... etc...

The other trick was to shit fish call "orange ruffy".......

Totally unscrupulous and illegal....

Nile Perch tastes like Barra ?????? Obvioulsy whoever wrote that has no taste buds and /or would benefit financially from Nile Perch sales. This fish tastes BAD. I've seen it for sale regularly at the local fish mongerers, but after eating the crap twice I simply would not buy it for anything other than cat food ( yes I hate cats).

Chances are ... indeed it's very likely.... that it wasn't actually Nile Perch Chappo.... just something labelled that way....

I don't mind NP personally (might have something to do with $11kg v $29kg for barra) but at the end of the day these fish look so similar once filleted (let alone battered) that most folk are oblivious to the differences and pay the higher prices.

I used to sell Nile perch out of my restaurant, but it was called "fish of the day". Never had any complaints about it.
