Can we help Gemmel?.... are they the trout you were trying to get?

Rope, nope, haven't got the trout - pretty much given up on them now. It's a bit late to start with them, I don't think I can grow them out in 6 months. AND my water temps are really low. 8 degrees most mornings and it's not even winter yet. So I really need to try and sort out how I can keep the temps more stable before I move on. So I think I'll go through the winter with my gold fish and then put silver perch in in spring.

The problems in my thread (on my blog anyway). Lost about 5 or 6 fish out of 70.

Just a question regarding salt. Is it a good idea to have some salt always in the water?

F&F runs quite high, at 2-3ppt all the time. It means you have to dose up higher if anything goes wrong (because it's the salinity change that actually kills stuff), but it might also mean less goes wrong....

I will go for less goes wrong over the last couple of weeks have moved 50 4 in silvers 5 times with temp differences up to 2.5 deg [hopefully have got it right now]

there is conjecture (my such big words tonight!) regarding the use of iodised salt and/or salt with the anticaking agent.

i've often used salt with teh anticaking agent with no probs, i dont think ive used the one with iodide, but cant see the levels supplemented being an issue and its a plus for the trace element ;)

Really.....hrrm. Might need to take a day off work and drive down to Tumut and back. 6 months would still pose problems, we'd be talking late spring. It gets HOT here in canberra.

Its all the hot air the politicians push out that raises the temp in Canberra.

How are you guys determining what salt is left in your system after a bit of a water change.
I looked at a refractometer but the low salt would be hard to read on the scale, low in the readout and hard to see the reading up to about 10ppt

My refractometer has units of scale of from 1ppt - 100ppt.... and is supposedly calibrated to 0.1ppt...

Shouldn't be hard to read as such.... most applications would use them for readings between 1-50ppt.... sea water is 35ppt .... :dontknow:
