Yes I would prefer that configuration with a venturi drain but conditions, landscpare and WAF do not alway allow for that tpye of setup? So many people end up with a sump as well.

On the pump issue ,, most set-ups have around 2 metre head ,, so get double what you want now ,,2,400 litres per hour at 2 metre head is a Jabao 5,000 ,, about $90 on ebay.

Am going bigger next year, but the 1200lph pump I have now doesn't seem to quite do the job, so will go for 4800lt pump on ebay $69 plus post, no I don't have a sump just a home made in tank bio filter with about 2foot of lift

Nup - but use about 1.7 metres in my system of pump in sump to fish tank, gravity from fish tank to grow-beds, gravity from grow-beds to sump. Sump in the big system will be at ground level (to hopefully allow for 2 levels of grow bed and cascading setup). The extra bit of head is to account for the fact that the su,mp will probably be 7 or so metres from the tanks.

I was hoping "bigger was better" and would mean future room for system growth. I guess I'm a "bigger is better" guy, stuck in a "less is more" world.

Over kill my be my problem... Will the fish be happy if the water is too rough? Is my current too fast? Is there a, "too fast"? I read somewhere here... the fish don't care (Channel Cats 200).

The tank is 3,500L+, the pump will turn the tank 3 times an hour but I can't filter this water without flooding, so it just wraps the grow beds & returns.

I got a honda sump, here: http://www.hondapowerequipment.com/prod ... id=WSP33AA

It's 170LPM/ 10.200LPH @ 25ft. head lift
thanks for the feed back,
